Etude of the Sacred Treasured Sword | Chapter 3
Chapter 2 << | index | >> Chapter 4
Akira: The treasured sword Caletvwlch......?
Riquet: I’ve heard of it before. It’s the legendary sword wielded by the First King Alec.
It’s housed in the church that worships the holy wizard Sir Faust......
Cain: Yeah. The moonstone from the Lunar Eclipse Palace was used as a medium in the Umbra Volans incident. Because of that, we’ve requested each country to carry out an investigation.
To figure out whether they’ve lost any treasures or relics...... Things like fragments of star stones, sacred trees, or the relics of heroes could be used as magical mediums, after all.
The findings that came back were horrifying. There’s been lost items all over the world. Things that might have been used as mediums.
Cain’s report is terrifying; that horrifying incident with the Umbra Volans was brought about using the moonstone in the Lunar Eclipse Palace.
If mediums equivalent to the moonstone have gone missing from around the world, there’s a chance we’ll see other disasters on that same scale.
Akira: (If someone stole this treasured sword and used it as a medium for wicked magic, we’ll be in deep trouble......)
Cain: Arthur tried to immediately house Caletvwlch at Granvelle Castle. The castle’s protection is stronger than the church’s, after all.
It’s all so that it doesn’t fall into the hands of Nova, the enigmatic wizard who is said to be the main perpetrator of the Umbra Volans incident.
But there’s been objection from Father Celio, the High Priest of the Holy Church of Faust, where Caletvwlch is currently housed.
Riquet: Why......?
Once again, Cain looks at Oz with reluctance. He mutters quietly, in an uncharacteristically weak voice.
Cain: ......He said that entrusting the sword to Arthur — who’s been brainwashed by Oz — would be like lending a hand to the downfall of the country.
He also said that Nova was Oz’s underling, and that saving the capital was a ruse to deceive the people.
Oz: ............
I look towards Oz. There is no trace of his sarcastic sneer from earlier — Oz lowers his eyes, lapsing into silence.
Oz: ......Is that what happened earlier today?
Cain: Yeah. No matter how much Arthur tried to explain, he wouldn’t listen to any of it. The next time you see Arthur, talk to him.
Oz: ......What should I say?
Cain: "You must be tired," or something like that. Anything is fine. A few words from someone close to you can save your heart.
All the criticism I’ve gotten has been annoying too. They say that this eye is proof that I’m being manipulated by Owen.
Oz, both you and Owen are from the North. The people are afraid of Northern wizards. That’s why it’s been so hard to win their trust.
Riquet: ............
Cain: Moreover, Caletvwlch is the prestige of the Holy Church of Faust. I understand why they wouldn’t want it to be taken away, but......
According to the vicar, Father Marco, there have been reports of suspicious shadows lurking in the church. It’s possible that the sword is being targeted......
Riquet frowns, lines etched between his adorable eyebrows. And then he catches himself, straightening his back like he’s trying to calm down.
Riquet: ......I understand. This means the path forward won’t be easy, right? What a deplorable state.
But it is precisely those who are deeply distrustful and rotten at their core who need proper guidance and salvation.
Tomorrow, I will purify everyone’s hearts.
Riquet declares, glaring ahead stiffly. Cain laughs, his expression softening.
Cain: How reliable.
Riquet: Please leave it to me. I don’t mean to offend you when I say this, but......
Unlike Prince Arthur or Cain, I have no connection to the Northern wizards. They should be willing to listen to what I have to say.
So please let me help tomorrow. I’ll protect Prince’s Arthur’s reputation and your reputation too, Cain.
Cain: Haha....... Thank you.
Cain nods while smiling wryly. Riquet beams, his smile full of confidence. He turns to look at Oz.
Riquet: What about you, Oz? Will you go to the castle with us tomorrow?
Oz: ......No.
Oz refuses Riquet’s invitation — perhaps he thinks that the talk will proceed more smoothly without his presence.
But it seems to have come off as indolence in Riquet’s eyes. Raising his eyebrows, Riquet rebukes Oz.
Riquet: Oz. Even if you’re the strongest wizard in the world, you won’t accomplish anything if you don’t take any action.
The look in Riquet’s eyes is dazzling, like the light spilling out of a lantern held aloft.
A brilliant, steadfast light that draws people’s hearts close like the first star of the evening.
Yet Oz murmurs faintly, his presence a flickering darkness lurking in the depths of hell, threatening to swallow that light.
Oz: I know.
