Etude of the Sacred Treasured Sword | Chapter 6

Chapter 5 << | index | >> Chapter 7

The entire room falls silent.
Everyone knows that Arthur was abandoned by the emotionally unstable queen.

Arthur: Why was Mother so deeply troubled? Why was I not blessed?

High Priest Celio: ......That’s.......

Arthur: Let’s put a stop to this.. I don’t want to see more children like me — or mothers like mine.
I know we can become friends. We should be able to work together to tackle the same problems. Please, won’t you listen and consider what we have to say?

High Priest Celio: ......
......I cannot hand Caletvwlch over to you.

At this, even Arthur covers his face with a sigh.
A heavy silence descends on the hall. Amidst the silence, a petite figure stands up.
—It’s Riquet.

Riquet: May I speak as well?

Arthur: ......Yes. Of course.

Riquet: I’m the Sage’s wizard, Riquet. As a disciple of God, I have guided followers all my life. I have a word for you all......

Riquet declares, his gaze solemn and dignified.

Riquet: Your hearts are corrupted to the core.

Castle person: Wha—.

(Chatter)

The hall is abuzz with noise.
Arthur’s eyes are blown wide open, and Cain looks like he’s on the verge of laughing out loud.

Riquet: But do not worry. Even if you’re foolish and impure, I’ll guide you all towards the correct path.

High Priest Celio: Such insolence! You dare call me — a man of the church — impure!?

Riquet: Yes.

High Priest Celio: Don’t answer so easily! You wicked wizard......! Do you mean to sway us and steal the treasured sword!?

Riquet: Wh—...... Did you just call me a wicked wizard!? You’re terrible! I won’t forgive you!

Arthur: R-Riquet. Calm down.

Riquet: Do you know that someone as mean as you will never reach salvation!?

High Priest Celio: Did you hear that, everyone! The wizard speaks curses! He cursed me!

Riquet: I did not curse you! Rutile taught me! That blessings and curses lie in words.....

High Priest Celio: So what you’re trying to say is that wizards have the power to curse us whenever they like — with just a single word! So how could we entrust the treasured sword to wizards!?

Arthur: Calm down, Celio! As a religious figure of our country, you should be careful not to inflame public anxiety.

Mister Celio falls silent, displeased. Riquet glares at him, holding back frustrated tears.
Arthur sighs.

Arthur: ......Let’s take a break. We’ll continue in the afternoon.

✦✧☾✧✦

Riquet: ......Sniff, sniff...... I’m sorry, Prince Arthur...... It’s all my fault that the meeting was ruined......

Riquet clings to Arthur’s chest, tears running down his cheeks. Arthur pats his head and smiles.

Arthur: It’s not your fault, Riquet.

Riquet: That’s right...... It’s the fault of that stupid, mean old man with his totally rotten heart and mind.........

Cain: I was furious too...... I’m sorry for losing my temper.

Arthur: It’s only normal to get angry. Anyone would be hurt to hear someone speak ill of the people important to them.

Riquet blinks, looking up at Arthur tearily.

Riquet: Prince Arthur, don’t you get angry......? Why don’t you lose your composure?

Arthur: There’s something the previous sage taught me.

Riquet: The previous sage......?

Arthur nods. As an invigorating wind blows past us, he smiles with sincerity, his blue eyes serene.

Arthur: Manners are key when it comes to promoting your idol1.

Akira: (The previous sage....................)

Riquet: What’s an idol......?

Arthur: It means people who are important to you, who you love and respect. To me, that means my comrades at the magic headquarters and Sir Sage.
Even if I say "You’re all foolish," "You’re wrong," to the people who don’t recognize how wonderful my idol is, that would only make them hate me — and my idol.

Riquet: Even if what I said was the truth......?

Arthur smiles, and gently pats Riquet’s head.

Arthur: When I first returned to the castle, everyone was afraid of me because I was a wizard — that made me really sad and lonely.
But the people who kept their distance from me weren’t mean or cold-hearted — they were normal, kind people.
They believed that they had to be wary of wizards for the sake of protecting the people they love. And what taught them that they had to be wary of wizards was......
Words born of kindness from people who cherished them in return.
Nobody is at fault. There is love in any mistake, just as there is violence in any justice.
If someone outright contradicts what you’ve been taught by the people precious to you, it’s natural to avoid getting closer to them. That’s why I listen.
There are times when I’m hurt by their words, and nights when it’s so painful that I can’t sleep. But as long as I recall the smiling faces of the people precious to me, I can overcome any suffering.
Because I love everyone. So I want everyone to love you all as well.

My heart grows warm at Arthur’s smile.
I feel the same way: I want the people important to me to be loved. I don’t want them to endure such painful words.
Even with magic, it’s difficult to change what lies in the hearts of people around the world.
But, as long as we don’t abandon the yearning in our hearts to get closer, there’s a chance that this world — no matter how mean and cold it might seem — can change, little by little......

1) Arthur says "推し" ("oshi"), which is the term used by fans of an idol to express that they are that idol’s supporter
