Etude of the Sacred Treasured Sword | Chapter 10

Chapter 9 << | index |

Faust doesn’t say anything; he simply gazes at the vanishing black shadows and the sword, quietly lowering his eyes.
He turns his back on us, muttering in his usual voice. It’s as if he’s trying to forcefully sever something that even the sword can’t cut.

Faust: .......My goodness. What a troublesome sword.

Riquet and Celio — who had rushed onto the scene later — watch over Arthur’s back as he raises the sword. They hold their breaths, eyes fixed on the sight in front of them.
As Arthur sheathes the sword, Mister Celio steps forward and falls to his knees in front of him.

(Footsteps)

Arthur stares at him, surprised.

Arthur: High Priest......

High Priest Celio: I apologize, Prince Arthur. Not only did I refuse to heed your warnings, I even exposed the sword to such danger......
My repeated disrespect towards Your Highness cannot be forgiven with a mere apology, but please understand that it is because I cherish the sword......
......No. Perhaps it’s just as this boy said: I may have placed the prestige of protecting the sword over the sword itself......

Arthur’s gaze is gentle as he looks at Father Celio’s helplessly trembling back.

Arthur: Because of you, the sword has been safe for the past decades. I’m grateful to you.

High Priest Celio: Prince Arthur......

Arthur: Can I remove Caletvwlch to Granvelle Castle?

High Priest Celio: Of course...... All shall be as Your Highness wishes.

Arthur kneels down, soothingly caressing Mister Celio’s back as he bows his head deeply.
Arthur’s lowered brows and his smile brimming with affection makes him look as if he really is Mister Celio’s grandson.

Arthur: You’ve been watching over this sword this entire time. Of course you’d feel lonely, sending it far away. I’m sorry I can’t leave it with you.

High Priest Celio: Your Highness......

Arthur: I’ll guard it carefully. In order to protect the sword, I’ll rely on your advice from now on as well.

Tears start forming at the corner of Mister Celio’s eyes. What Arthur said the other day — this must be what he meant.
To understand someone’s pain. To understand what they hold dear. To understand why they might hate us.
By patiently listening to them and meeting them halfway, instead of dismissing them — this way, there must be a bond that can bind us together.
This must be how he formed connections. Even with the lonely Oz who was once called the demon king.

Cain: Arthur! I’m glad you got it taken care of!

Riquet: I’m so happy you’re safe, Prince Arthur!

Arthur: I couldn’t have done it without everyone here. Cain, Riquet, thank you. You too, Faust, and all of the Eastern wizards!

Shino: So will we get those commemorative medals?

Heathcliff: You were amazing, Mr. Faust!

From a distance, Oz gazes at the lively scene of the wizards gathered together.
Noticing this, Riquet runs up to Oz’s side, looking up at him rebukingly.

(Footsteps)

Riquet: Oz. I told you: if you don’t take any action, you won’t accomplish anything.

Oz: ............

Oz falls into silence, like he’s searching for words. As he does, Riquet pulls on his arm, beaming angelically.

(Rustle)

Riquet: I’ll guide you onto the correct path. Because that’s my role.

(Rustle) (Footsteps)

Pulling Oz’s arm forcefully, Riquet drags him into the circle where everyone stands.
Surely this must be something only Riquet can do — leading the way ahead without a second thought, a bright light raised in front of him.
Arthur blinks, gazing up at Oz.
Cain shoves Oz’s back teasingly.
Under everyone’s watchful gaze, Oz gently, awkwardly, reaches a hand towards Arthur.

He tenderly caresses Arthur’s head with the hint of a smile.

Oz: You did well.

Arthur breaks into an embarrassed smile, brimming with happiness.
Perhaps the scene makes Mister Celio change his mind about Oz and the Northern wizards.
With Mister Celio’s support, the Sage’s wizards can finally start operating officially a few days later.
In order to solve the mysterious incidents around the world.

And thus, the treasured sword Caletvwlch came to be housed in Granvelle Castle.
Apparently, it’s been cloaked with magic that would enable only a chosen person to draw it. Barring extreme circumstances, it probably shouldn’t get stolen.
The commemorative medals were released without trouble, and are now a popular souvenir of the Central castle.
The Central wizards often share meals together now. Riquet loves food, so it’s always merry around the dining table.

Akira: It’s thanks to Riquet’s hard work that everyone is getting along so well......

(Knock knock)

Riquet: Sir Sage! Sir Sage, listen to this!

I hear Riquet’s voice. When I open the door, Riquet looks angry, his adorable brows all knitted together.

Riquet: Cain ate my chocolate. It wasn’t like I didn’t want it, I was just saving it for last! The same thing happened last time!
Sir Sage, please talk to him so he can correct his behavior! ......Why are you laughing?

Akira: Fufu...... It’s nothing. What did Arthur and Oz say?

Riquet: Prince Arthur said that everyone makes mistakes. But this is the second time! And Oz just mumbled something.

Akira: Ahaha.

Riquet: It wasn’t like I didn’t want it, I was just saving it for last! You’d want to save delicious things for last, right?

Riquet: Sheesh!
.....But I’ll forgive him just this once.
Because I’m a gracious disciple of God!
