Ballad of the Brave Trailblazer | Chapter 3
Chapter 2 << | index | >> Chapter 4
And thus the Northern wizards agree to join us. A total of nine wizards will be investigating the underground palace.
Akira: We’re headed to a mountainous region of Southern Country. It’s apparently very cold — so Chloe made us some warm outfits in a hurry.
Figaro: Wow, nice. How do I look, Sir Sage?
Akira: You look great.
Snow: It suits you quite well, Figaro.
White: We praised you, so now it’s your turn to praise us. Come on.
Figaro: Yes, yes. You two look absolutely adorable.
Mitile: Are the Northern wizards coming with us too?
Bradley: What, got any complaints?
Lennox: I don’t have any complaints, but I am a bit surprised.
Mithra: I’m not going because I want to go.
Owen: Sigh. What a pain.
Rutile: Oh, that’s right, Sir Sage! Please accept this.

Akira: Ah. Is this the picture of the frog that you drew, Rutile......?
Rutile: I was really happy when you praised me, so I wanted to offer it to you as a gift, Sir Sage. I made it small using magic.
Since we’re headed to a remote region of Southern Country, I cast a blessing upon it in hopes of a safe journey.
If you keep it with you, it’ll reduce your fatigue, and it can also act as a charm.
Akira: Wow, that’s amazing....! Thank you very much. I’ll treasure it.
Bradley: That picture of a dying bird is a charm? Southern wizards sure are weird.
Mithra: It looks like a tool you’d use for a cursed ritual.

Our destination is a remote region of Southern Country where nature spreads in its true form.
The peaks of the distant mountains, capped with snow, are dignified and beautiful, and a smattering of green tufts of grass lies between the rocky ridges.
Brook: Oh, there you are! We were waiting for you. I’m Brook.
We’re greeted by a large, well-built man waving at us. His arms are as robust as logs.
Seeing us, he says, with a loud voice:
Brook: Thanks for coming! So you’re the Sage and his attendant wizards.
Just as I go to greet him kindly, the air freezes over.
Bradley: ....Attendant wizards....?
Akira: ...M-Mister Brook! Let me introduce everyone. I’m the Sage, and they’re the "Sage’s wizards."
I can feel the sweat forming on my back as I introduce ourselves. We exchange a handshake as I try my best to emphasize that they’re "Sage’s wizards."
Brook: Huh, I see. Thanks for coming all the way down here!
Mister Brook laughs with a wide smile that shows his white teeth. His handshake is so strong that it leaves my hand a bit numb.
Girl: .......
Rutile: Huh? There’s someone behind you.....
I didn’t notice her because Mister Brook was so overwhelming, but there’s someone standing behind his large back.
Brook: Oh, I brought one of my underlings along. Come on, Stacy. Say hi.
A young girl steps forward like a tiny animal peeking out from behind a large tree.
Her childish features make her look about the same age as Mitile or Riquet.
Stacy: N-nice to meet you, I’m Stacy. I help out with Mister Brooks’ work.
Her golden braids fall from her shoulders as she bows. She’s dressed in boyish work clothes, but her gestures are modest.
Brook: Stacy’s actually a witch too.
Mitile: Really?
Stacy: But I’m not very good at using magic yet.... I’ve just been practicing, bit by bit.
Brook: Hahaha. Magic is great and all, but I hope you learn how to do your job, too.
Mister Brook’s large hand ruffles the hair on her tiny head.
Brook: She’s the one who found the entrance to this underground palace.
We took a look inside because we had no idea what was going on, and a tremendously long staircase led us all the way underground.... To these ancient ruins. I fell over when I first saw them.
And that’s when I thought, maybe that grandma’s words were actually important.
Lennox: The warning — "Do not approach Poincaré."
Stacy: She was a strange old lady. After saying that, she disappeared like smoke. I was so scared....
Mithra: Then why don’t you just look for a different place to settle? There’s more than enough land here.
Brook: It’s not that easy, big guy!
Mithra: What?
Akira: (Eek.... He’s whacking Mithra on the back like they’re friends or something.....)
Mithra: I see. Then I’ll kill you right now and make you one with the earth.
Akira: M-Mithra! Please calm down....!
Brook: Haha. You’ve got some sense of humor there, big guy.
It’s hard to find land with clear water, you see. Plus, my comrades were all exhausted from the long journey. We really had no choice but to settle there.
Figaro: And that’s when you discovered the underground palace, huh. I’m not surprised you felt like something strange was going on.
Mister Brook nods deeply and crosses his arms.
Brook: I can handle most things with my own two hands, but there’s nothing I can do when it comes to ruins and demons.
If nothing comes of the investigation, that’s great. But if something does happen... I’d be grateful if you could help me out with this magic of yours.
Mitile: Leave it to us. We’ll definitely figure it out!
Brook: Hey, aren’t you a reliable guy. But wow.... You wizards are all so young. The twins are even younger than Stacy.
Snow: Mister, we’re hungry~.
White: I want candy!
Brook: Huh, are you guys hungry? Here, have a cookie.
Snow & White: Yay~!
Brook: I thought Central Country, where the magic headquarters are, was a wealthy nation; I can’t believe they’d have such young children as part of the labor force.....
Mister Brook spins around as if sympathizing with us, and grabs Mithra and Owen by the shoulders.
Brook: You guys must’ve gone through a lot. Look at how skinny you are.
If you ever find yourselves going hungry, just come to me for help. I’ll hire you as one of my underlings.
Owen: ......Well thanks.
I can make out the veins that are ready to pop on the proud Northern wizards’ faces.
Mithra: I really want to bury him.
Owen: We should slice up his arms and legs one at a time. It’ll be a cacophony of screaming and the sounds of his bones and skin being torn to pieces. Doesn’t that sound like fun?
Akira: P-please! No burying, and no slicing....!
