Ballad of the Brave Trailblazer | Chapter 5

Chapter 4 << | index | >> Chapter 6

Brook: You’re powerful wizards....? I don’t see it at all. Does that mean you can lift barrels and smash them into pieces?

Owen: What are we talking about? Child’s play?

Bradley: Smashing barrels wouldn’t even count as after-dinner exercise.

Brook: S... Seriously!? Then can you smash boulders too?

Bradley: Of course. Who the hell do you think I am?

Brook: I’m surprised. I didn’t realize wizards were capable of so much.....

Mithra: I’m capable of something even more amazing. Let me show you. << Arthi.... >>

Akira: M-Mithra! Stop!

Stacy: Eep!

Brook's monologue: A sharp scream cuts through the air. I turn around to see Stacy almost tipping over on her broom.

Brook: Stacy!

Lennox: She just lost her balance. You’re all right: take a deep breath.

Mitile: You can do it, Stacy....!

Brook's monologue: With tears in her eyes, Stacy inhales and exhales deeply. The broom quietly begins to tilt upright, and returns to its original angle.

Brook: ...Phew. You scared me right there. Don’t make me worry like that.

Brook's monologue: As I let out a deep sigh, the back in front of me shakes with giggles, fluttering around like a spring breeze.

Rutile: You know, when I first flew on a broom, I drove myself right into a tree. It’s difficult when you’re a beginner.
She flies amazingly well, you know — especially for someone who was never taught how to fly.

Brook: (....Is that just how it always is?)

Brook's monologue: I look around and meet the Sage’s eye. He nods, as if he’s read my mind.

Akira: The wizards at the magic headquarters train every day, you know.
Some of them train in order to get stronger; others train in order to fulfill their duties; and others train in order to protect the people they love....
I don’t understand how magic works, but I believe their efforts are what build their strength.

Brook's monologue: The Sage smiles good-naturedly.

Brook: (I see... So even the Sage’s wizards couldn’t control magic as they pleased since birth....)

✦✧☾✧✦

After we’ve been flying for some time, the wizards begin to complain about their empty stomachs.
Stacy also looks visibly exhausted, so we stop by the woods to take a break.

Akira: (...Hm? What’s going on?)

Mister Brook approaches me as I’m resting on a boulder. He looks like he’s searching for something.

Akira: What’s wrong, Mister Brook?

Brook: Oh, have you seen Stacy? I can’t seem to find her anywhere.

Akira: Stacy? She was with Lennox and the others just a moment ago.

Lennox: She’s over there.

I look up to where Lennox is pointing, and spot two shadows spinning around on their brooms. It’s Mitile and Stacy.

Brook: Hey now! Shouldn’t Stacy be resting instead of practicing?

Lennox: We tried to stop her too, but.....

Rutile: After a short break, she grabbed her broom and took to the skies.
She said she wanted to learn how to fly as soon as possible so that she could be helpful to you, Mister Brook.

Mister Brook’s eyes open wide in surprise. He looks up into the sky and watches the two of them fly as if it’s a blinding sight.
Stacy looks far more confident than she was when we first departed.

Brook: ....She’s looking pretty good.

Lennox: She’s a hard worker, and she knows how to stay focused. Once she gets the hang of it, she’ll improve quickly. I’m sure she’ll become a great witch.

Rutile: My mother was also an incredible wizard — she was known as the great witch. Maybe Stacy will also be known as a great witch one day.

Brook: A great witch.....
....Stacy never had a father, you see. And her mother got sick and passed away when she was young, so I’ve been taking care of her all these years.
She was always such a feeble crybaby, so I thought I had to protect her; I thought she couldn’t do anything without me, but....

Mister Brooks gazes into the high skies as he says, passively.

Brook: Is she gonna become a witch who lives for over two thousand years....?

Lennox: I don’t know what lies in store for her, but it’s certainly possible. Stacy’s life has only just begun.

The two spinning shadows in the sky do a turn through the air and land on the ground, side by side. Stacy hops off her broom and runs towards Mister Brook.

(Rustle)

Stacy: Mister Brook, did you just see that?

Brook: I sure did. You’ve improved a whole lot!

Stacy: Ehehe....! It’s all thanks to everything the Sage’s wizards taught me.

Stacy hugs her broom, her cheeks pink with delight. I can no longer see the timid shadows that had once flickered in her gaze.

✦✧☾✧✦

We resume our journey through the skies. After we’ve made it past a few mountains, Mister Brook guides us to the entrance of the underground palace.
From the surface, it looks like a giant well. But when we look down, we see a stone staircase headed downwards.

Figaro: Looks like a pretty long staircase. Watch your step.

(Footsteps)

The staircase carries us to the depths of the earth, as if it’s connected to the bottom of hell. The path is narrow, and grows darker the deeper we go.

Owen: It’s dark and damp and awful down here.... I really shouldn’t have come.

If the wizards hadn’t been guiding us with their lights, I would’ve been reluctant to take another step forward.

Lennox: ....Here we are.

We reach the end of the staircase. The air has changed — I can tell we’re in a wide open space now.

White: << Noscomina >>

White’s spell lights up the room as if he’s turned on the lights.
And I almost lose my breath at the sight before my eyes.
