Ballad of the Brave Trailblazer | Chapter 6
Chapter 5 << | index | >> Chapter 7
Akira: ....!
Rutile & Mitile: ....Wow.....
Akira: So this is the ancient palace.....
There are milk-colored pillars lined up across the room, and delicate engravings embedded on the ceiling. A magnificent civilization must have once flourished here.
Brook: I didn’t realize it was this spacious inside..... The torch I used last time could only show us so much.....
We’re amazed by the grandness of the palace — but Mithra, Owen, and Bradley seem to have a different reaction.
Akira: What’s wrong, you three?
Bradley: I remember it now. This place, this atmosphere.... This underground palace is Poincaré.
Akira: This is Poincaré....?
At Bradley’s words, I recall the ominous warning issued by the old lady.
"Do not approach Poincaré, at any cost. For you shall hinder the slumber of the sinister demon that lies there."
Brook: So that granny was telling us not to come here, huh.....
Mitile: Does that mean... A sinister demon sleeps here?
Bradley: It’s not that big a deal. The creature that’s sealed away here is just an ancient magical creature with a ton of magic.
Figaro: An ancient magical creature..... In any case, it sounds like a reasonably troublesome opponent.
Snow: But why do you three know about it?
Mithra: Because we were the ones who sealed it here.
Akira: Eh!?
Mithra: It was a couple hundreds of years ago, I think.... A mad wizard used a forbidden spell to bring an ancient species back to life, and it was making a horrible storm in Northern Country.
It wasn’t as strong as Oz, but it was still rather powerful. That ancient creature turned a single mountain into a sea of fire, after all.
Snow & White: Really?
White: If Oz did not defeat it, it must have been after I was killed by Snow.
Snow: Or maybe it was around the time Central Country was established. Both we and the world were rather busy around that time, after all.
Mithra: I don’t care. In any case, it was getting to be a real eyesore in Northern Country, so I tried to defeat the ancient creature.
Owen: Mithra and the beast were making so much noise thrashing about that I had to go help him out too.
Bradley: And I felt like they were gonna raid my territory, so. It was a huge pain, but I lent them a hand too.
And we almost got the ancient creature, but it escaped at the last moment. Man, it pisses me off to this day.
Mithra: But we managed to capture the wizard who was the cause of all the destruction, so I cast a curse upon him.
Lennox: What sort of curse?
Mithra: A curse that would transform the wizard into a magical tool that would seal away the ancient creature for eternity.
I ordered him to pursue the fleeing beast, and to use his very body to seal it away at the very moment it fell into an exhausted slumber.
Mithra speaks of the horrifying curse as if he were talking about the weather. I’m reminded of the fact that he’s a brutal Northern wizard, and my back goes cold.
Owen: We made sure to watch over him by reflecting the moment he sealed the ancient creature in a pool of water.
Bradley: Yeah. And this was the place the ancient creature laid to rest. It fled all the way to Southern Country despite being badly beat up — it sure was a tough one.
White: So you’re like, totally an interested party in all this.
Snow: Of course the name sounded familiar.
Snow & White: Mithra, dear.....
What was sealed away here was not a sinister demon.
But it doesn’t make me feel much better: somewhere in this ancient palace, there lies a ferocious magical creature that caused these three a lot of trouble.
The place smells damp — abandoned by the earth above. Coupled with the cold air that has never known the warmth of the sun, it suddenly has me feeling very anxious.
Stacy: ...Ah.
Akira: What is it, Stacy?
Stacy: There’s something here.
Stacy recites her spell, and a dim light emits from her palm. She traces the wall with that hand.
The surface peels off like fish scales and gives way to a solemn door.
Snow: Oh, it’s a secret door.
Lennox: There’s a path through it. Let’s head down.
The door leads to a narrow, dark hallway. We keep going and reach a single room.

(Footsteps)
Akira: This is.....
Figaro: Looks like an ancient temple.
Perhaps a ritual was performed here.
A simple altar, made of stones stacked up like a pyramid, lies at the center of what looks like a magic circle painted on the floor of the room.
There are no fancy artifacts in this room aside from the golden skull placed upon the altar. It draws my eye.
Bradley: ...I don’t like this. We sealed it away a while ago, but it’s still brimming with magic.
Rutile: Sir Sage, are you all right?
Akira: Yes. My body feels a bit heavy, but....
I don’t sense a single drop of purity and respect for a divine being here. The only thing I feel is an ominous and malicious atmosphere that clings to the body.
Brook: ........
Mitile: Mister Brook?
(Footsteps)
Mister Brook suddenly dashes towards the altar as if he’s been possessed.
