Ballad of the Brave Trailblazer | Chapter 7

Chapter 6 << | index | >> Chapter 8

I don’t even have a chance to stop him as he grabs the skull that has been placed atop the altar.

Mithra: What is that human doing?

Stacy: Mister Brook? What happened to you!?

Brook: ....Huh? What am I....?

Mister Brook returns to his senses. I don’t think he understands what’s going on: he stands there, spacing out with the skull in hand.
That’s when I hear the sound of something slipping away at my feet. I look down, and see the magic circle slowly turning to sand and disappearing.

Akira: The magic circle....! What’s going on.....?

Mithra: This is bad.... That skull was the magic tool that sealed away the ancient creature.

Snow: It must have taken over the human because he has no resistance to magic — and used him to undo the seal. At this rate, the ancient creature will come back to life....!

Owen: It would’ve been fun if it possessed you too, Sir Sage.

Akira: (He has a point; if it can control humans, I should’ve been a target as well. Why was it only Mister Brook....?)

Just as the question crosses my mind, I recall the amulet Rutile gave me. I pull open my chest pocket and peer in.

Akira: .....!

The frog painting is in pieces — as if something has torn it apart.

Akira: (Did this frog protect me....?)

Brook: ...Woah!?

The magic circle disappears in no time. The next moment, the skull flies right out of Mister Brook’s hand.

(Woosh)

Mitile: The skull....!

And as it does, an ominous sound reverberates from the altar.
Glub. Glub. A dark shadow appears from where the skull had been placed.
In a blink, it shoots up like a fountain and overflows throughout the room.

Snow: The golden skull is the wizard who was turned into a magic tool! Now that the seal has been undone, the ancient creature will awaken!

White: We must chase the skull and capture it. Without it, we cannot seal away the ancient creature again!

Rutile: I see. I’ll chase after it on my broom and capture it!

Mithra: Huh? What are you saying? You’re weak, so please stay put.

Rutile: I am a Sage’s wizard too. You want to seal away the ancient creature too, right, Mister Mithra?
Plus, I’m faster than anyone when it comes to flying!

Bradley: Hah. I like weak idiots who are up for a challenge. I’ll team up with you — let’s go!

Rutile and Bradley hop onto their brooms and chase after the skull in no time.

Mitile: I’ll go too.... Woah!?

(Rustle)

Mithra: Oh, please. I can’t have you running about too.

Mitile: Mister Mithra...! Please don’t grab me by the collar!

The dark shadow grows bigger and bigger. It begins to growl like a beast as it takes on a more concrete form.
Gradually, the shadows merge into a silhouette resembling a giant wolf or a tiger, which howls in our faces.

(Roar)

Akira: ....So this is the ancient magical creature...?

Mithra: ...How strange. It wasn’t a fuzzy shadow like this before: it had an actual form.

White: After such a long slumber, it probably hasn’t been fully resurrected yet. We need to put it down before it truly awakens, or else it’s going to make its way up to the surface and cause great trouble.

Owen: << Cure Memini >>

(Clash)

Akira: !?

Owen: In other words, we just need to kill it. Let’s get this over with.

Owen’s attack strikes the beast and blasts it away. All that’s left is the crumbling altar.

Bradley: D... Did you get it?

Lennox: ....No.

A bustling, unpleasant sound echoes from beneath my feet. I look down, and see a scattered army of black shadows clamoring underneath the remains of the altar.

Lennox: It fled by scattering into pieces.

Mithra: Can’t you actually put an end to it?

Owen: Oh, shut up.

Snow: ...Muh. Here it comes.

The black smoke that had been crawling about on the floor regains a discernible form. This time, it’s not one shadow, but two.

Akira: It split in two....!?

The magical creature, split in two, leaps at us from opposing sides.

Snow: Ohoho. Numbers mean nothing against us, you see.

Snow & White: << Noscomnia >>

Snow and White separate and utter their spell. A dome-shaped wall appears and protects us.
The magical creature crashes into the wall, and howls as it backs away.

Mitile: So cool....! All right, I’m going to protect everyone too! << Ortoni.... >>

Figaro: Hold up, Mitile.

Mitile: Dr. Figaro! Why are you stopping me?

Figaro: There’s something else I’d like to ask you to do, Mitile.
Because this magical creature has been revived, the magic in this area is becoming more and more powerful. At this rate, it’s just a matter of time before it influences the surface.
So can you and White keep guard over what’s going on up there?

Mitile: Keep guard over the surface.... I understand. Then you should come with us too, Dr. Figaro....!

Figaro: I’ll stay behind. I need to take care of everyone in case they get hurt, you know.
I might not be as strong as the Northern wizards, but there’s still something I can do here. Likewise, I want you to fulfill your duty, Mitile.
I know you can handle it — right?

Mitile: ...! Yes! Because I am also a Sage’s wizard!
That’s right. Here’s an herbal potion I made. Please use it if something happens.

Figaro: Thank you. You’re truly reliable, Mitile.

Mithra: Sigh......

(Rustle)

Mitile: Woah, Mister Mithra? What is this....?

Mithra: It’s a ring: I cast a protective spell on it. Please hold onto it — if anything happens to you, I’m in trouble.

Mitile: ....Thank you very much, Mister Mithra! Ehehe, it’s a cool ring!

Mithra: White. Make sure you take care of him.

White: ...All right, I guess I have no choice. Mitile, let’s head up to the surface together. I’m counting on the rest of you down here.

(Footsteps)

Figaro: ....Now then. Know your place, you crafty little beast — you’ll soon realize what a mistake you’ve made by turning your fangs against me.
