Prelude to the Festival and Miracles | Chapter 5
Chapter 4 << | index | >> Chapter 6
A little way off from the village, we wait for the sun to set.
Nero had gathered some creepy and horrifying information.
Nero: On the slope headed towards the village lake, there were tons of those stuck in the ground.
Akira: Tons of what?
Nero: Wizards’ broomsticks. They were shaking, like grave-markers. Broken brooms, blood-stained brooms, rusting brooms.
A damp wind blows through the pitch-black night. That means the number of brooms stands for the number of wizards who arrived here and left them behind — for whatever reason.
Akira: (Were they killed...? But how did the humans kill wizards?)
Feeling my throat growing tight, I look to the sky, but even the moonlight is covered by heavy clouds. I fear the darkness sticking to my body.
I yearn for the light of the < Great Catastrophe >.
Akira: (Longing for the moon — am I Murr? No, that's not right... Murr always loves the moon. He never hates it or fears it.)
(That boy back there.... Zasha, too. He admired Heathcliff, but the moment he realized he was a wizard, he turned stone cold.)
(We desire and fear as we please. We're such inconsistent, selfish beings... just as Faust once said...)
Faust: I've gotten used to the smell and sound; my senses are returning. There's strong magic coming from the church. I don't think it belongs to a wizard, but...
Heathcliff: Is it a mystical creature?
Faust: No... I don't sense life, but.... For now, I'll go check, so you wait here.
Shino: I'll go too.
Nero: I'll go. Shino and Heath, you stay here and protect the Sage. Make sure you hide when the villagers pass by.
Shino: Wait. I'm a specialist when it comes to defeating monsters.
Faust: You two stay put. You never know what's hiding.
Shino: All the more reason to bring more people. I'm coming along.
Faust: You won't listen to me?
Shino: You’re the one who won’t listen to me. It’s better if I’m there. I’ll be useful.
Faust: Got it. Then head back to the wizards’ quarters right now.
Shino goes silent at the sound of Faust’s strict voice. I can’t see his face in the darkness, but I can tell he’s hurt and frustrated.
Faust quietly instructs Shino. This time, it’s not just his usual glumness — you can hear dignity and sincerity in his voice as well.
Faust: You're a man who can become a hero. But if you get impatient and waste your courage, you're going to lose your life. I've seen plenty of people like that.
I don't want to cast aside your talent and future the same way. I will tell you when I need your strength. Let me ask you again — can you listen to me?
Shino: .....Got it.
Faust: Good.
Faust breathes and casually puts his hand on Shino's head.
Faust: Heath. Take care of Shino and the Sage.
Heathcliff: G... got it. Please be careful.
Nero laughs wryly as they walk off.
Nero: I feel like I've caught a glimpse of you. From back when you were a leader of the revolutionary army....
Faust: You've got the wrong man. Let's go.
They disappear, as if melting into the darkness.
Akira: Will they be all right....?
Heathcliff: If it's Mr. Faust and Nero, I'm sure... ....Hey, Shino. Don't sulk.
Shino: I'm not sulking.
Shino stands straight and gazes into the darkness.
Shino: That was the first time someone told me I could be a hero.
✦✧ ☾✧✦
Nero: You sure are overprotective.
Faust: Not to the point where you can say that to me.
....That's the church. I didn't mention it earlier, but what lies in there is probably....
(Rustling)
Nero: ......! It’s the villagers....
Villager: ...Where are the wizards? Have they left the village already?
Villager: They might still be around. We must catch them and fulfill the village’s duty...
Villager: To protect this world from the < Great Catastrophe >....
Faust: Protect the world from the < Great Catastrophe >...?
Hey, what are you talking abou.... Ngggh....
Nero: Sh. Leave it to me. Follow my lead, all right?
Faust: What do you mean, follow your lead....
Nero: —Hey, are you guys from the village?
Villager: ......!
Nero: I lost the ingredients for our meal, you see.... Sorry, I know I said no to dinner, but could you at least offer us some water?
Villager: O... of course. I have some water right here. Please take it....
Faust: ....! I can't drink this. This water is...
Nero: Thanks, man!
Faust: Nero!
(Gulp)
Nero: ...Ah, it tastes great! I was just so thirsty back there, thanks! You should have some too, Faust.
Faust: .............Fine.
Villager: ............
Nero: ...Ugh... what's this!? M-my body... suddenly won't move.....
Ugh, I can't move....... .....
(Thump)
Faust: Nero....!
Villager: .......
Faust: ....Hey, don't mess with me. Follow your lead? I absolutely refuse. I've never done that sort of thing.
Wake up. Hey, Nero!
Nero: ........
Villager: ........
Faust: ........
Ugh... uugh.... my body....
(Thump)
.........
Villager: ....Thank goodness. The poison finally got around to him... though it took some time.
Villager: Too bad we couldn't get the other two, but let's put these guys on the cart and carry them to the holy grounds.
Villager: As an offering to our god who protects us from the < Great Catastrophe >....
