Prelude to the Festival and Miracles | Chapter 8

Chapter 7 << | index | >> Chapter 9

The rust on the axe looks like blood. I’m terrified, but the bloody look in Zasha’s eyes is even more terrifying.

Zasha: You really are nothing but liars, you wizards! I'll throw you into the lake and turn you to stone! Ah, god, please forgive me....

Shino: Zasha. Stop. Put down the axe.

Zasha: Shut up....!

Shino: Listen! We are the ones protecting this world. Not you.

Zasha: It's our duty...! Father and grandfather both put their lives on the line for it! They sacrificed wizards and offered miracle stones to the catastrophe....

Shino: You're wrong! This isn't an incarnation of the < Great Catastrophe >! You’ve been killing innocent wizards for some pointless belief!

Zasha: That's not true...! ....That can't be true! Then that would mean this village has nothing at all!

Shino: That's right. This village is like an abandoned graveyard. That's what it is.

Heathcliff: Shino.....

Zasha: ....You....!

Shino: I was the same! I was abandoned by my parents and forgotten by the world. I had nothing at all.
That's why I refused to listen to anyone. I lived alone; my world was me alone.
Because if I cut off the world and lived within my loneliness, I could forget that I had nothing, and be the protagonist of my own world.

Zasha: ..........

Shino: Everyone else was a fool. They were all weak, stupid, and worthless. I might be worthless, but so are you — that's what I thought.
This village has twisted its loneliness and aggravated its mistaken beliefs too far. But Zasha, you're different.
You looked at Heath and were interested — in nobles, in the outside world.

Zasha: ....That's not true....

Shino: Put down the axe. Once you've fulfilled your duty in this village, I'll take you out of here.
Just as I arrived at Blanchett, I'll make sure you arrive somewhere, too. Zasha!

Heathcliff: ....Zasha. Please believe in us.

Zasha looks up in response to Heathcliff’s voice.
Heathcliff offers Zasha his hand, just like the wizard turned to stone.

Heathcliff: I might be a wizard, but I will never lie to you. I will never hurt you.

Zasha: ......h...

(Footsteps)

Zasha slowly walks towards Heathcliff. He looks like he’s about to cry.
Heath looks relieved, but furrows his brows pitifully as he gazes at Zasha's swollen cheeks.

Heathcliff: ....How awful... Who in the world beat you like this....?

The moment Heathcliff asks, Zasha’s shoulders shake, as if he’s remembered something.
Suddenly, Shino yells.

Shino: Heath, watch out....!

Heathcliff: Eh?

Heath turns around to look at Shino.
And Zasha grips his axe and swings it down upon Heath.

Zasha: You can’t enchant me, wizards....!

(Slash)

Heathcliff: ......!

✦✧ ☾✧✦

(Cluttered sounds)

Villager: All right... Let’s throw the wizards into the lake.... ...Ah....

Villager: They're gone from the cart...!?

Nero: Sigh... My shoulders are stiff. Hey Mr. Faust, nice acting back there.

Faust: Shut up.

Villager: ....You....!

Nero: << Adnodus Omnis >>

Villager: Uu... I'm so sleepy...

(Thump)

Nero: These guys... They thought they were saving the world from the < Great Catastrophe >....

Faust: It was common knowledge from before we were born that wizards push back the < Great Catastrophe >.
Where did this misunderstanding emerge? The tragedy they brought about is a making of their devotion. If they were guided properly....

Nero: They must've been shut-ins, just like you. When you cut off the outside world, you begin to think lies are truth.
But even if you're alone, you can't empty out your head too. Because it's rough to keep thinking about nothing.
.....Plus, this place is so lonely.... They might've wanted a duty to live for....
Duty can taste really sweet sometimes. Especially when you're a guy who has nothing.

Faust: ....I don't think so.

Nero: Well, of course you wouldn't. Even though you're all peevish and sulking and twisted and shut-in now.....

Faust: Who did you just call peevish and sulking and twisted?

Nero: But at your core, you're a leader. You were born in Central, after all. You've never lacked a sense of self, right?

Faust: .........

Nero: I was a man with no sense of self, so... If someone needed me, and gave me a role, I'd drool for it in delight.
Even if I knew he wouldn't listen to a single thing I had to say, even if I couldn't stand it....
If he said, "I need you, or else I’m in trouble" then I'd be deeply moved and wag my tail. ...Man, I had it coming....

Faust: ........ Is this about your past?

Nero: It's about my past. Your least favorite kind of food, right, Mr. Faust?

Faust: Indeed. I'll push it to the side of my plate.
Let's start the meal with this guy in the lake.

(Splash)

Nero: ....I'm amazed the villagers weren't eaten by this thing.

Faust: It must've realized they brought it wizards to eat. It’s smart for a fish-brain.
Or perhaps I should call it a monster fish.
