Etude of the Mischievous Mask | Chapter 8
Chapter 7 << | index | >> Chapter 9
Shylock: I’ve never met one before. There are spirits who beckon death, but as I recall, they do not like flashy outfits or decorations.
Murr: Did someone actually die?
Cock Robin: No... Sir Partle’s wife simply closed herself off in her room because the rumors bothered her so....
Rustica: I see. So it may be that they have been haunted by the rumors more so than the mask itself. Of course one would be terrified of a dance of death.
Shylock: But I am a bit surprised. There are currently many problems in this world that need to be solved; I thought we would be prioritizing incidents where there are lives at stake.
A political squabble with Western country... You've put diplomatic relations first. Does Prince Arthur know of this?
Cock Robin: ...It’s actually a secret. But please understand. Central Country has been under scrutiny because it hosts the magic headquarters.
Furthermore, with Western Country growing increasingly powerful, Central Country needs to avoid creating international conflict....
They’re discussing difficult matters. I can tell that Shylock’s tone is sterner than usual. He sighs, and furrows his brows.
Shylock: Prince Arthur would be hurt if he found out. And those in need of saviors will also question the true loyalty of the Sage’s wizards.
Murr: What, so we're the wizards who will save Central Country, and not the world?
Figaro: That's precisely why we're doing it as practice for the young wizards.
Shylock: ....Sir Figaro, you knew?
Figaro: I was the one who suggested it, you see. I adore Arthur, and unlike you, I know how to compromise and play favorites.
If we solve this incident in full view of all the Western and Central nobles, it’ll help build a positive reputation for the Sage’s wizards. And that will make the jobs we complete from here on out much easier.
Figaro shrugs, and Shylock frowns. Mitile tugs at Figaro’s arm worriedly.
Mitile: Dr. Figaro, what's wrong....? Is there a problem....?
Figaro: Don't worry. Shylock is a grown-up, so I’m sure he'll understand.
With that, Shylock's gaze turns to clear disdain. He glares at Figaro with ice-cold eyes.
Shylock: Western wizards might not have a strong sense of justice. But we loathe things that go against our aesthetic sensibilities.
I will follow your bidding for tonight. But there won't be a next time.
Figaro is unmoved; he keeps smiling peacefully, his shoulders relaxed.
Figaro: I’ve never tried to make you follow my bidding. I respect your noble sense of beauty. It reminds me of a pure, innocent, ignorant child in his youth.
Shylock: I don't think that's worse than an ancient tree that leeches on the young saplings growing about him. You have sold the young wizards' first stage to the political squabbles between humans.
Shylock snaps at him, and walks into the elevator. Figaro scratches his head and smiles at me.
Figaro: Sorry, don't worry about it. ...But it sure is scary when beautiful people get mad. That made my heart race.
Shylock: Hurry up. We'll leave you behind.
(Footsteps)
We all hurry into the elevator, following Shylock’s irritated voice. Chloe gazes at Shylock intently.
He turns his chin down, and whispers, with a small light in his violet eyes....
Chloe: ...I'll do my best.
✦✧☾✧✦
The masquerade ball has already opened at Mister Partle’s castle. Nobles from Central and the West are chatting away.
The room, filled with masked people, feels bizarre and strange. Maybe it’s because they fear the dance of death — nobody is dancing.
Akira: (If the mysterious masked stranger appears right now, I don’t think anyone would notice...)
Shylock and Figaro stand by the wall, watching over us. I can tell Figaro is being considerate.
Mitile: ...I apologize to all the Western wizards. It looks like Dr. Figaro made Mister Shylock mad....
Chloe: Mitile...
Mitile: Dr. Figaro can be rude and shameless and lack common sense, and he has a terrible sense of humor sometimes, but....
Murr: You're really saying a lot here!
Mitile: ...But he's not a bad person.
Mitile insists, furrowing his brows. His earnestness makes me think of what Chloe said in the elevator. A tiny mumble — “I'll do my best.”
Rustica: I'm glad he's a good person. Shylock is a good person too, so we'll be all right. Don’t you agree, Murr?
Murr: Shylock hates being rounded up into someone else's plans! Figaro's got that powerful vibe where he’s ready to round people up, so Shylock is all tense~!
Lennox: You’re right. He does always put on that kind of pressure.
Akira: ...Chloe, earlier you looked at Shylock and said, “I'll do my best,” right? What did you mean?
Chloe: Ah, you heard me? That’s embarrassing... That's, um... Shylock looked kind of sad, so....
I thought he'd be happy if we managed to solve this mystery. Because he probably got angry for our sake, right?
So I thought, if we make this a good night for us, maybe Shylock will be happy too.

Lennox: Chloe... You're a kind, good boy.
Rustica: You’re making me blush.
Lennox: I wasn't exactly praising you....
Rutile: That's right! If we all work together, Dr. Figaro and Mister Shylock might have an easier time making up!
Mitile: Let's show them how much we've grown, so that our teachers can get along again!
Murr: Let's work hard together~!
