Prelude to the Festival and Justice | Chapter 5

Chapter 4 << | index | >> Chapter 6

???: ....Oz......Why.......

Akira: ............! The voices just now......? The things flickering around you......

Oz: They’re the dead souls of Mesa.

Akira: Dead souls!?

My skin crawls reflexively. Surrounded by unseen shadows, Oz languidly closes his eyes.

Oz: .....Destroying their souls is simple. But if they are extinguished without first being purified, they can never be reincarnated.
The holy festival must be completed in order to guide these souls without destroying them.

Akira: Then...... You have to deal with this until we perform the holy festival?

Oz: Yes.
If Arthur hears these voices of resentment, he will surely learn of my true nature.

✦✧☾✧✦

Arthur: What could Sir Sage and Sir Oz be talking about?

Cain: Precautions, maybe? The Southern wizards have been assigned to support us, so they might be trying to make sure nothing dangerous happens.

Riquet: I’m prepared to face some danger. This is our duty, after all.

Cain: I feel the same way. But your attitude back there wasn’t great. Neither Rutile nor Mitile are cowards.
They’re simply cautious because they have family that’s important to them. You’re Mitile’s friend: you might have hurt him by saying something like that, you know.

Riquet: But...... I didn’t like it.

Cain: Didn’t like what?

Riquet: Seeing Oz’s incredible magic just now, I was so exhilarated and deeply moved. I thought: Incredible! He’s so strong! I want that kind of strength!

Arthur: I understand that feeling. Sir Oz is so cool, isn’t he!

Cain: He really is! Having strong magic sure is cool.

Riquet: But...... Mitile and Rutile looked scared. Sir Sage, too, probably......
I wanted Mitile to admire powerful things with me. I wanted us to go on adventures together......

Cain: You can’t help that you have different natures.
This is something Owen said to me before. "Northern wizards and Central wizards are similar in their pure yearning for powerful things."
Some people have no interest in power; others are genuinely terrified of power. That’s all there is to it. It doesn’t mean you can’t be friends.

Riquet: ...... I see......

Arthur: It’s just as Cain says. Besides, Sir Oz is a kind person, so their fear will fade as they spend more time with him.

Riquet: The people at the religious organization said that Oz is a wicked wizard who dominated the world. How much of that is actually true?

Arthur: None of it, obviously.
Sir Oz wouldn’t dominate any person or any country. He’s just misunderstood because he’s strong and has a dignified presence.
He used to run over whenever I fell, and he would stay by my side whenever I got sick.
He’s never done anything horrible to either of you, right?

Riquet: That’s true...... I’m a little relieved.

Cain: He’s not talkative and he seems scary, but he’s easy to get along with, somehow. More than anything else, he’s reliable.

Arthur: That’s right. He’s a kind and reliable person. As long as we have Sir Oz here today, everything will be all right.

Cain: Yeah. Speak of the devil — here comes Oz and Sir Sage.

Riquet: Huh...? I wonder why...... There’s a disquieting aura in the air......

Arthur: ......Sir Oz......?

✦✧☾✧✦

(Dark shadows swirling)

???: ......Oz......

???: Oz...... Begone......

Oz: ............

Akira: O-Oz! Are you really okay with this? If you bring this many dead souls along with you, Arthur and the others will definitely find out.

Oz: .....Then let them.

Akira: But......

Arthur: Sir Oz! Sir Sage!

I’m startled, hearing Arthur’s voice from a distance away.

Akira: (Saying to let them...... It’s true that it was entirely his doing, but......)
(Arthur believes in Oz. I don’t want to see him get hurt...... Even if this is a truth he has to face someday......)
(This isn’t something that he should have to find out just because they have to fulfill their roles as the Sage’s wizards; it should come properly from Oz himself.)

I look up at Oz’s face, surrounded by the horde of dead souls.

Akira: (Destroying them would be simple, he said. And yet the fact that he hasn’t done so to protect his true identity means......)
(Doesn’t that mean the current Oz is a kind person? Even if he was the demon king in the past.)

After much deliberation, I stand in front of Oz, thrusting my hand against his chest to push him back.

Oz: ......What’s this.

Akira: You don’t have to go any further. We’ll handle it somehow.

Oz: Sage......

Akira: You just stay here and wait for us.

Oz: How foolish...... Arthur, Cain and Riquet may all be capable wizards, but they’re still young.
You need my power to defeat the history and curses of Mesa.....

Akira: You’re the idiot, Oz!

Oz: What did you say?

Oz looks ready to pop a vein at the word "idiot." I press on desperately—there’s no time to think of better words.

Akira: What you did in the past was idiotic, and what you’re thinking of doing now is also idiotic! Just think....... Think about it properly!
About yourself, and the people around you...... Think about the people who you love, and the people who love you!

Oz: .........
