Prelude to the Festival and Endearment | Chapter 3

Chapter 2 << | index | >> Chapter 4

Mitile: Sir Sage. It can’t create a perfect copy of something you’ve seen, but I’m thinking of bringing this.

Mitile says, and shows me a pretty, empty glass jar. There are words on the label.

Akira: What does it say?

Mitile: "A gift for Riquet." I’m thinking of stuffing it with scenes from our travels and bringing them back to him.

Akira: Stuffing it with scenes from our travels? You can do that with magic?

Mitile: No! I’m just going to put dirt and sand and grass in it. If possible, I want to find some pretty flowers, and jewels, and sea shells too.
I wanted to go on a journey with Riquet, but Riquet can’t come along this time, so.
I want to put my favorite scenery in this jar, replicating it the best I can. I hope it works.

Mitile laughs gently; he takes the jar into his palms like a treasure and carefully checks it for cracks and scratches.
I feel a quiet sort of respect for Mitile as I gaze at this sweet gesture.

Akira: (This is what I love about the Southern wizards.....)
(They don’t stress about what they’re missing; instead, they get creative, and use what they have to enjoy small pleasures at their own pace, as if they’re all precious treasures.)
(I should be more like Mitile and enjoy my travels in a new way in this world.)

Murr rolls over on the desk and places his arm under his head like a pillow. He grins.

Murr: The secret to having the most wonderful trip is to discover something irreplaceable!

Akira: Something irreplaceable....? How?

Murr: You’ll find out when you go!

Mitile: Do you mean something amazing is going to happen, or we’re going to find something incredible, just like in a story?

Mitile leans forward in excitement. Murr narrows his eyes like a cat and smiles with a twinkle of brilliance in his eyes.

Murr: Of course. Treasures and dragons aren’t the only kinds of discoveries in this world; when you venture out to discover a new wind, you will meet miracles along with it.
Our travels shall be blessed.

Mitile and I look at each other, and I laugh.
We’re getting more and more excited for this trip. Let’s enjoy this journey. Let’s start by treasuring the time we spend packing for it.
Let’s stuff our bags with all our favorite things; let’s enjoy this freedom with our whole bodies; let’s search for something special that only we can find.
As we head out to meet an unknown world.

✦✧☾✧✦

Chloe: Sir Sage, Mitile, are you done packing?

Mitile: Yes! How about you, Mister Chloe and Mister Rustica?

Chloe: We’re ready to go! I packed my sewing kit too!

Rustica: And I have my favorite teacup.

Akira: Rustica, you and Chloe were traveling the world before you came here, right?

Rustica: Yes. I had always been traveling, and Chloe tagged along with me.

Chloe: So feel free to ask us anything! I can tell you how to find a good place to stay, and how to pretend you’re human.....

Mitile: You won’t need to pretend you’re human. Because wizards are appreciated in Southern Country.

Chloe: Eh...? Oh, right. You mentioned that.

Chloe nods, but he still looks anxious. Timidly, he asks Mitile.

Chloe: ...Are you sure we’ll be all right? They won’t tell us to leave or get out?

Mitile: I think we’ll be fine. Oh, but they might ask you for help sometimes. Like, they’ll say, please fix this, or please get that for me.

Chloe: ........

With eyes filled with anxiety and hope, Chloe quietly glances at Rustica.
I don’t know what kind of wish Rustica saw in that gaze. But he smiles gently and responds.

Rustica: It would be delightful to meet people who want to get along with us. Isn’t this exciting, Chloe?

Chloe: Yeah......

Chloe’s careful, short response reflects the pain he’s experienced from being hurt over and over again.

✦✧☾✧✦

Lennox: Sir Sage. Mitile.

Akira: Lennox, Rutile. That’s a lot of luggage.....

Rutile: When we mentioned that our mission would be a real journey, the wizards from other countries gave us all sorts of tokens to bring along.

Mitile: Woah, amazing! What’s this book with a fancy leather cover?

Lennox: It’s from Prince Arthur. He said it was a travel diary. These are medicines from Sir Faust: for stomach pain, for fever, for hemostasis, and painkillers.....

Rutile: I borrowed a dagger from Mister Cain! Ta-da! Isn’t it so cool!

(Unsheathes)

Mitile: That’s neat! I’ll take that!

Rutile: Nope. This is cool, so nii-sama gets to keep it.

Mitile: Eh!? No fair! Knowing you, nii-sama, you’re going to lose the scabbard and then stab your own butt from carelessness!

Rutile: I-I’ll be fine! Mitile, you can borrow this instead. It’s a compass I got from Heathcliff.

Mitile: Woah....! What a delicate design....! What’s a compass?

Lennox: It gives you cardinal directions. Try opening it. See, the tip of this stone points north.

Mitile: Wow! I feel like an adventurer! I like this more than the dagger!

Rutile: The dagger is cool too! Ah. Right, Mister Mithra gave me this....
