Prelude to the Festival and Endearment | Chapter 4

Chapter 3 << | index | >> Chapter 5

Mitile: What is this smelly thing.... .....Is it a stuffed bird?

Rutile: He said it's a magical flute. If you put the tail end to your mouth and breathe into it, the bird will come back to life and squawk.

Mitile: .....I don't want to put that in my mouth......

Rutile: When we're in danger, all we have to do is blow into this flute, and Mister Mithra will come to our rescue! Isn't that kind of cool?

Mitile: Will he really.... Mister Mithra can be pretty lazy....

Rutile: He said he would come, you know. Maybe we should try blowing it on our way back, even if we never run into danger?

Mitile: Okay, well, I'm leaving it to you, nii-sama... I don't want to put this thing in my mouth....

Lennox: I don't think you should trouble Mithra by calling him over for no reason. Ah... Sir Sage. This is from Sir Snow and Sir White.

Akira: For me? ...What's this....? It looks like a transparent glass sheet....

Lennox: It's a magical stained glass. If you dip it in water and lift it to the sky for a while, it'll copy the pattern of the stars.

Akira: Huh, fascinating!

Lennox: It might be a good bookmark for the sage’s manual. Please try using it as a memento for your trip.

Akira: Yes! I need to thank them later. I know we’re doing our job, but I'm getting more and more excited for this trip.

Mitile: Me too. I know we're not going to play; it's an important job, so I thought I would get yelled at for being all giddy, but...
Everyone is so kind. Even the noble Central wizards and the strict Eastern wizards....
They've all given us so many things. I feel like they're watching over us; it makes me so happy.

Lennox: Haha... Sir Oz and Sir Faust can be strict at times, but it's only because they want to protect us all from danger.
We’re headed off to a safe destination this time — that’s why we want you to enjoy your experience to the fullest, Mitile.

Mitile: Mister Leno....

Lennox: If you ever need our help, we'll help you. But you're going on a journey for the first time in your life. You should try to enjoy some of the troubles you’ll encounter.

Lennox smiles gently. The eyes behind his glasses are full of warmth and kindness.
I recall that Lennox once traveled the world in search of Faust before he settled down in Southern Country.

Akira: Lennox, can you tell me about your memories from your travels?

Lennox: I don’t think I could express them succinctly. But, well.... They were all good memories.

Lennox says clumsily, then pushes up his glasses and smiles quietly.
He notices that I haven’t taken my eyes off of him, and gives me a wry smile as he resumes talking.

Lennox: How should I put it... I've seen many sights that I'll never forget, and I've gone through many unforgettable experiences.
None of them are the sorts of things you'd read in books, but for me... They all feel special.
There are people whose faces I will never forget, despite knowing that we’ll never meet again, and there are simple exchanges that I will never let go of.
Um, what was it called... It's like that, but I can't remember the right word....

Mitile: Like that?

Lennox: I'll tell you when I figure it out. But we're planning on leaving early tomorrow morning, so you should rest early today.

Mitile: Got it.

Akira: Thank you, Lennox.

✦✧☾✧✦

I head to bed early because we’re leaving tomorrow. I turn off the light, and get ready for tomorrow.
I lay down in bed, but just don’t feel sleepy. I’m too excited to doze off.

Akira: (We're leaving tomorrow! I'm always so busy with all the Sage’s work, but it looks like we can enjoy our trip this time.)
(I’m happy it seems like a trip where we can say, "I want to see this, I want to go there!" I hope I get to meet interesting creatures and eat delicious food.)
(I hear Southern Country has wide valleys and endless wastelands and boulders the size of castles. I wonder if I’ll get to see them all?)
(But I wonder if my butt will hurt from sitting on a broom all day? Wait, how are we going to handle going to the bathroom....)
(What if I head off to pee alone and I'm attacked by a scary monster...? What about poisonous bugs and snakes....?)
(Right. We’re not driving, so I can’t even doze off. What if I fall off the broom....?)

I can’t close my eyes in the dark room. I keep getting more and more anxious.
I can’t believe how my excitement from a moment ago has fallen into an endless, lonely pit of pessimism.
I leave the room for a change of pace.
