Prelude to the Festival and Endearment | Chapter 6
Chapter 5 << | index | >> Chapter 7
Rutile speeds through the sky, breaking the wind. Just watching him feels refreshing.
Akira: Rutile is so fast....
Murr: All right! I'll try to catch up!
Shylock: What happened to being my sunblock?
Murr: That’ll have to wait for another time! Woohoo!
Shylock laughs wryly as Murr leaps into the sky in front of his eyes.
It’s finally time to leave. We head into the sky one by one.
✦✧☾✧✦
Lennox's broom is steady and very comfortable.
The clay-colored earth sprawls endlessly under the bright blue sky that looks like it's been painted over. It’s a breathtaking sight.
Akira: The earth is shining in the morning sun... I didn't know that the earth could shine like the sea.
Lennox: Mornings do feel good. Please let me know if you ever get tired.
Akira: Thank you. Ah, here.
Lennox: Huh... What's this?
I reach out towards Lennox's face from behind, offering him a biscuit from Miss Canary.
Akira: It's a snack.
Lennox: Haha. Already?
Akira: Oh, wait, you can’t let go of your broom? Then please open your mouth.

Lennox: ....... This is a little embarrassing.....
I don’t quite catch what Lennox is mumbling as he bites into the biscuit.
The journey through the sky is lovely. Though we were surprised by a flock of birds and a sudden gust of wind. Rustica also managed to doze off and flip upside down once.
Shylock smokes his pipe from time to time. Chloe sings delightful songs. Figaro teaches Mitile all sorts of things, step by step.
The scenes created by nature are beautiful; I feel energized just by basking in the sun and taking a deep breath.
By the time the sun is high in the sky, Rutile and Murr — who had flown far ahead of us — come dashing back.
(Woosh)
Shylock: Oh, you're back. Did you come to pick us up?
Rutile: Yes, but. There's also a village a little while ahead, and it looks like they're in trouble.
Rustica: In trouble?
Murr: They were waving at us. I think they wanted us to head down.
Chloe: Will we be okay...? I heard that the Eastern wizards were treated really terribly by Eastern villagers last time.
Figaro: Oh, this happens all the time in the South. Magic is useful, after all. They probably want us to help with something.
Rutile: So may we head down to the village?
Figaro: Yes, go on ahead. Let's eat lunch there while we’re at it.
Chloe: Will we really be okay...?
Chloe still looks scared. Rutile flies up next to him and smiles cheerfully.
Rutile: Don't worry! They probably want us to move a fallen tree, or to help someone who’s gotten ill all of a sudden.
People asked me for help all the time when I was flying around my neighborhood. If you're worried, let's head down together.
Chloe: Yeah...
✦✧☾✧✦
Rutile guides us to the sky above a small village.
There are several houses lined up in a valley surrounded by several clay-colored mountains. I spot a horse stable and a small farm too.
We look down to see people — who look like peas from this distance — waving at us with their arms and swaths of cloth.
It doesn’t look like any terrible catastrophe has stuck them, but it also doesn’t seem like they’re trying to fool us. Lennox murmurs.
Lennox: Ah... There are dead cows. A number of them have collapsed at the far end of the farm.
Akira: Eh....!?
I look towards the farm in surprise. He’s right — a few cows have collapsed on their sides.
Maybe something happened because of the < Great Catastrophe >.
A cold shudder runs through me like a wake-up call from my vacation mindset; suddenly, nervousness wells up in me as I’m reminded of my role in this world.
Shylock: Why don't we go ask them what's wrong. Chloe, what will you do?
Chloe: I... I'll go too.
Rutile: Don't worry. They might treat us to some delicious milk!
Rutile’s cheeriness makes me feel at ease, but I steal a glance at Chloe’s anxious profile and pray that his concerns are proven wrong.
Please don’t let this gentle friend of mine get hurt; instead, I hope he’ll be happily surprised by the experience.
