Prelude to the Festival and Endearment | Chapter 7

Chapter 6 << | index | >> Chapter 8

Villager: Ah, here they come! I'm sorry. You must have been traveling, flying through the air in a group like that. There just aren't many wizards around here, you see....

Figaro: No, we were looking for a place to stop for lunch. Do you mind if we rest here?

Villager: Feel free. Here, while you’re at it, have some cheese and bread. Hey kids! Help set up the table!

Village children: Ye~s!
Wizards! There are wizards here! Hey, can I touch your broom?

Rutile: Sure! Take turns, ok?

The children’s cheerful voices surround Rutile and Chloe. Chloe’s nervous expression begins to turn into a smile.

Chloe: ...Want to look at mine too?

Village child: Wow, your broom is so cool! We spotted you from below. Did you see us waving?

Chloe: Yup, I did. That's why we came here!

The children warm up to Chloe when he smiles. They pull a blue chair towards him.

Village child: Sit here! I painted this chair, you know!

Chloe: Wow! You're talented!

As Chloe and the village children set the table for lunch, Figaro speaks with the adults.

Figaro: What happened here? We saw the dead cows from the sky. I'm so sorry.

Villager: Something has been attacking and eating them every night lately. When night falls, a strange monster resembling a wolf comes wandering in....
It's about the size of a cow. We’re afraid it might move on to the children next...
We can't offer much, but do you think you could defeat it with magic?

Shylock: We’ll take the job.

Shylock, who is standing next to Figaro, speaks up.

Shylock: If it's a monster that arrives only during the night, the Western wizards will stay in the village and handle it. Is that all right, Sir Sage?

Akira: That's fine by me, but... Is it really okay?

Shylock smiles happily and turns towards Chloe.

Shylock: It's our way of returning your kind welcome. You’ve made Chloe so happy.

Villager: Thank you. You’re such a kind and humble wizard.

The old man stretches his back and tiptoes to give Shylock a hug. Shylock laughs.

Shylock: You're welcome. People say that about me all the time.

We all sit around a shaky wooden table that rattles as we eat our lunch under the bright sun.
A chicken walks by our feet, and goats wander around us. Nero’s lunch and the village cheese are both delicious.
The fresh milk is especially delightful.

Akira: This is delicious! The milk's still warm!

Villager: I'm glad you like it. Please eat up. Where are you guys headed?

Rutile: We're headed beyond the Rheita Mountains, all the way to the Southernmost reaches!

Villager: That’s pretty far off. I'm glad it's sunny. Take care, and please stop by on the way back.

Rutile: Yay! I'll drop by to eat more cheese. It’s so delicious.

Sunlight dances about the green yard and the table surrounded by people.
We fill ourselves with lunch, and say goodbye to the villagers and the Western wizards.
Our exchanges with the people of Southern Country are all pleasant. I hope our future encounters will be just as lovely.

When the sun begins to set, Figaro suggests that we look for a place to stay the night.

Figaro: It looks like Mitile is pretty tired. It's only the first day. We don't want to push ourselves.

I turn around to look at Mitile. He’s not completely exhausted, but he looks less focused than he did this morning.

Akira: What happens when wizards use too much magic?

Lennox: It depends on the wizard. Some wizards are more alert and become irritable from the excitement; others get mentally exhausted and stop thinking.

Akira: Oh no, that sounds rough... Are you holding up, Lennox?

Lennox: I'm used to flying for extended periods of time, so I’m fine. Ah... Looks like we're stopping there. Let's head down.

The Southern wizards choose to land by the bank of a great blue river.
Translucent pure water flows with a roar that echoes across the wide river. Red soil and green grass form a patchwork along the bank.
On the other end of the great river lies an endless wilderness. Bathed in the sunset, the earth glows in a golden-red color.
We stop, mesmerized by the heavenly view of the sunset.

Akira: It's beautiful....

Rutile: It is beautiful..... The river, the earth, the sky — they all come together to make one painting under the sparkling sunset.

Mitile: Sir Sage! Night is approaching from the sky over there!

I turn to look in the direction Mitile points. A deep blue sky filled with stars lies opposite the sunset.
