Etude of the Frog Taking Shelter From the Rain | Chapter 10
Chapter 9 << | index |
Akira: ....Ahaha....! I’m soaking wet....!

Rutile: Ahaha! You surprised me!
Droplets scatter high in the air as we burst into laughter.
The narrow threads of rain, the surface of the lake, the droplets scattering through the air — they all glitter under the moonlight.
Mitile: Geez, what are you doing!?
Snow: Playing with water!
White: It looks fun!
The twins, trapped within a frame because of their bizarre injury, leap outwards with delighted voices.
Like paper streamers cast onto a departing ship, the twins drag along the lengthy shadows cast from the edge of frame as they dance across the traveling garden of water.
Rutile and Bradley kick at the surface of the lake, splashing water at one another while dancing together.
Lennox’s sheep mingle with them; he must have made them appear for the occasion. They leap across the water in pure joy.
Figaro takes a gracious bow and invites Snow to a dance.
White takes Mitile’s hand, and they spin round and round together.
Mithra gazes at the moon all alone.
(Rustle) (Baa)
Akira: Ahaha! That tickles!
Lennox’s sheep nuzzles up against me, and I laugh.
Lennox: .........
Before I know it, Lennox is by my side. He offers me his hand, as if it’s the most natural thing to do.
And just as naturally, I take his hand.
We dance, drenched from head to toe, gazing at each other with smiles on our faces.
Lennox: What a lovely night.
Akira: It really is a lovely night!
We think of the wizard Colin and the frog Chloros as we dance under the moonlight.
Akira: That’s right, Lennox. Can I make one request?
Lennox: Of course. Your wish is my command, Sir Sage.
Akira: Please make up with Figaro. You may not have been fighting, but I’m still a little concerned.
Lennox’s eyes widen in surprise. He looks around for Figaro, and beckons him towards us. Figaro immediately comes splashing our way.
I guess they really weren’t fighting. Figaro is smiling with bright eyes.
Figaro: What is it?
Lennox: Sir Sage would like to see us make up.
Figaro: Ahaha! What do you mean? We aren’t fighting. Are you talking about what happened earlier today?
Those "oh no" moments happen every day. If you’re bothered by such trivial matters, you won’t be able to handle living in any country in this world — be it the South, or the North.
Figaro tries to persuade me, but I laugh and shake my head.
Akira: They didn’t bother me back in my world, either. But I want to treasure them in this world. So please, Figaro.
Because, just maybe — like the rain that falls upon this garden, they might pile up and cause a flood one day.
It’s rare for Figaro to gaze at me with such a serious expression. He then smiles gently at the garden with a tinge of sadness in his eyes.
Figaro: ...You’re right. That might be how things end — and how things begin.
Thank you, Sir Sage. I’ll heed your warning.
Lennox. To be honest, I was a little irritated back there.
Figaro smiles, and offers Lennox his right hand. Lennox grips his hand in response and nods.
Lennox: I apologize. I was inconsiderate.
Figaro: No, it’s not your fault. I was just taking it out on you. But.... I also wish I hadn’t acted that way back there.
Lennox: Please don’t worry about it. I’m sorry for never being attentive enough. I’m terrible at catching on to feelings.....
Figaro: Ahaha, I know, I know. It’s fine.
Lennox softly narrows his eyes and smiles at Figaro’s joking response.
He must have smiled the same way when he met Colin during his journey.
Like a bouquet dedicated as a prayer, or offered to soothe someone’s pain, he’ll always stay close by your side, swaying in the wind.
Lennox: Dr. Figaro, Sir Sage. Rutile and Mitile; I feel very fortunate to be with all of you right now.
I’m glad I got to see the garden he left behind — filled with signs of his life — before it disappeared.
His simple words warm the depths of my heart. Figaro’s brows turn downward in a quiet laugh.
It’s a bizarre, gentle, and mysterious night.
We use magic to build bridges and fountains made completely out of water; we spend our time loving this whole garden.
It’s lonely; it’s sad. But at the same time, we feel like we’re living out a happy and delightful dream.
✦✧☾✧✦
But eventually, it’s time for the miracle to come to an end.
Snow: There’s a thin string hanging from this dewdrop tree. It’s probably the switch for the magic tool.
White: If you pull this, the garden should disappear.
Lennox nods in response to the twins’ explanation.
He reaches toward the silver string with his large palm. Everyone watches him in silence.
The sheep. The wizards. Even the < Great Catastrophe > itself.
Lennox: .........

Lennox: Goodbye, Colin.
The soft farewell falls to the ground like a gentle droplet of rain as Lennox pulls the silver string.
The dewdrop trees, the water mill, the sign, and the box all turn to water in an instant and come crashing down into the ground.
✦✧☾✧✦
A giant splash echoes through the space.
And thus the garden disappears like a beloved illusion.
✦✧☾✧✦
Without leaving a single trace behind.
But an aged purple frog-shaped figurine lays by Lennox’s feet.
It must be Colin’s magic tool. A mana stone lies next to the purple frog, as if keeping it company.
Lennox gently picks them up like treasures and hands the figurine to me.
Lennox: Please hold onto this, Sir Sage.
Akira: But.....
Lennox: I don’t think there’s any magic left — but it’ll be a good token to commemorate this night.
I pause, unsure of what to do. But ultimately, I place my hand in Lennox’s hand, and grip the purple frog tight.
Akira: ...I understand. I’ll treasure it.
Lennox smiles from behind his glasses. It’s a clear, starry night.
✦✧☾✧✦
(Rainfall)
Akira: (This brings back memories.... Of the mysterious garden of rain.....)
I gently trace the purple frog figurine with my fingertips while listening to the rain.
That’s when I hear a knock.
(Knock knock)
Lennox: Sir Sage.
It’s Lennox. I tell him to come in, and he opens the door.
Lennox: We’re all about to have tea together. Would you like to join us?
Akira: Of course! It looks like everyone’s staying home at the magic headquarters today because of the rain.
Lennox: It’s nice to have this sort of day once in a while. ....Ah.
It looks like Lennox has noticed the purple frog figurine on my desk.
Lennox: ...I was just thinking about that day too.
Akira: Haha.... It’s raining, after all.
Lennox gazes down at me and smiles kindly.
Lennox: What a lovely rain.
His quiet whisper of gentle affection mingles with the pattering of the rain and melts away.
I nod and smile.
Akira: It really is a lovely rain.
