Etude of the Melancholy Sunflower | Chapter 1
| index | >> Chapter 2
Akira: My wardrobe has really grown since I first came to this world....
Ah... this stole.....

I take the soft stole, dyed a pale yellow, into my hands.
The pale yellow color comes from sunflowers. I close my eyes, thinking back to the view of a certain sunflower field.
Akira: ....This brings back memories....
Of the Eastern wizards’ first practice mission....
✦✧☾✧✦
Even after we resolve the incident at the Central capital, and we have all lived together in the magic headquarters for a while.....
Faust, the teacher of the Eastern wizards, rarely emerges from his room.
(Knock knock)
Shino: Hey, Faust. Teach us magic. The other guys have already started training.
Heathcliff: Stop it, Shino. He might still be asleep......
Shino: It’s almost noon.
Heathcliff: Maybe he’s having trouble falling asleep because of his change in residence.
....He looked sleep-deprived the last time I saw him, too.....
....I owe Mr. Faust my life. I’m happy that we can live together in the magic headquarters now, but....
Maybe it’s just trouble for him......
✦✧☾✧✦
Faust: ..........
Nero: Morning, Mr. Faust. It’s way past lunchtime. Everyone’s gone off to do their thing.
Faust: .....Nero.
Nero: Did you come here late to avoid seeing people?
Faust: I don’t like the noise. I’ll head back to my room if there’s nothing left to eat. I can go a few days without food.....
Nero: Here, take this with you.
(Rustle)
Faust: ....What’s this basket for? Are you headed out to a picnic?
Nero: There’s bread and cheese and steamed vegetables and a quiche. The wine is a bonus.
Faust: ....... I’m not drinking in the afternoon.....
Nero: Just drink it and go to sleep. You’re having trouble falling asleep, right? Those eyebags look awful.
Or do you not want to sleep?
Faust: .......Why do you ask?
Nero: I can bring a full pot of coffee to your room at midnight.
Faust: You’re certainly observant......
Nero: I used to do nutritional management for my comrades. That’s why it’s become a habit. Your mind and body are built from what you eat, after all.
Faust: That’s surprising.
Nero: What, the nutritional management?
Faust: No, the comrades. You said you had trouble getting along with others.
Nero: ....They were my comrades in the distant past. Hey, Mr. Faust. Shino and Heath are waiting for your lessons.
Faust: Don’t address me like I’m a teacher. You’ve lived longer than me, haven’t you? It’s mere speculation, but.....
Nero: All right then, Faust. But let me call you "Mister" once in a while. I’ve never had a teacher before, you see.
Faust: What about for cooking or magic? Did nobody teach you those?
Nero: You’re the first. How about you? Did anyone teach you magic.....
Faust: No.
Nero: I see. Then you must know how hard it is to learn on your own. Teach the kids and help them out.
Faust: ....I’m not suited for teaching. You should guide them instead.
Nero: Me? I’m even less suited for the job.
Faust: Why do you say that?
Nero: Because I’m not kind.
Faust: And neither am I. I’m a shut-in who refuses to eat lunch with others. I’ll take this, though. Thank you.
Nero: Sure thing. Come join us when you feel like it.
Faust: ....... Nero. Have you ever visited my room at midnight?
Nero: No..... I haven’t.
Faust: That’s good. Never pay me a visit.
Nero: What...? Are you dancing with ghosts or something?
Faust: It’s something similar.
✦✧☾✧✦
The bizarre injury that the < Great Catastrophe > left upon Faust makes his dreams overflow into reality.
I witnessed his dreams, and discovered that Faust, now a curseworker, was once a hero who saved the nation.
It seems like he doesn’t want anyone to know about his past.
Maybe that is why he’s having trouble sleeping: he fears that his dreams will overflow again.
Akira: He said he would set up a barrier to prevent his dreams from overflowing, but it must still bother him.....
Lennox: .....I agree.
The Southern wizard Lennox used to be Faust’s personal servant. He’s a gentle and sincere person, trusted by all.
Lennox: At this rate, he’s going to ruin his health..... I will try talking to Sir Faust.
Akira: Yes, please. ...I wonder if I further burdened him by asking him to teach the Eastern wizards.
Heath said he was a good teacher, and Faust is a kind person at his core, so I thought he was a good fit for the job.
Lennox smiles happily when I say Faust is a kind person.
Lennox: I think Sir Faust is the perfect person to instruct the young wizards. He was an excellent leader, after all.
....And I think the current Sir Faust would be better off with a role of some kind.
Akira: A role.... You mean as a Sage’s wizard, or as the teacher of Eastern Country?
Lennox: Yes.
I can’t bring myself to agree right away, because I’m reluctant to assign a role to someone who has suffered so much.
I remember what Oz once told me: do not get crushed by your role.
But it seems like Lennox sees right through me. He murmurs, gently.
Lennox: Do not worry, Sir Sage. I don’t wish for his misfortune.
Could you leave the matter to me for a little while?
✦✧☾✧✦
(Rustle)
Faust: ....Nn......
(That was a short dream.... It looks like the barrier is still up, but.... .....I wonder if it holds while I’m sleeping.....)
(I want to believe I’m safe because I’m using a medium......)
........ I sense someone's presence outside the room.....
