Ballad of the Dreaming Pilot | Chapter 3
Chapter 2 << | index | >> Chapter 4
Benjamin: But none of that changes the fact that the ship is gone. I pressed my higher-ups to investigate the matter, but they wouldn’t even consider it.
Cain: They’re not going to investigate the disappearance of a ship that was built under government supervision?
Benjamin: It was developed in complete secrecy, after all. Neither the country nor the military can carry out an open investigation.
Cain: I see... So it’s classified information.
Benjamin: .....You’re pretty sensible. Are you really a Western wizard? Those guys do nothing but fool around and cause trouble.
Cain: N-nah, my friends and I all agree that I’m a troublemaking wizard!
(Ring)
Cain suddenly rings the handbell as if he’s remembered his role.
Benjamin: ....? Well, whatever. Anyway, that’s when I heard rumors of a flying airship.
Riquet: We heard about sightings of a shadow in the sky over Central Country. Could it be....?
Benjamin: That’s right. You’re Rick, right? I’m surprised you know what’s going on in other countries.
Riquet: I-I heard it from the Central wizards. They’re very hardworking and noble, you see.
Benjamin: Wizards are all the same. Anyway, I caught hold of those rumors, and just couldn’t sit still. That’s why I’m here.
But man, I didn’t realize how much work it would take just to meet you all. All these procedures and background checks ate up my time.
I was lucky enough to meet an official.... What was his name, Drummond from the Ministry of Magical Affairs?
Murr: The old guy with the beard!
Benjamin: Old gu.... I mean, I guess you’re right. I managed to visit you all today because he interceded.
Akira: I see.
(I didn’t realize the procedure was so complicated....)
Arthur: .........
Chloe: Arthur... I mean, Arty, what’s wrong? You look lost in thought.
Arthur: No, it’s just.... Benjamin, do you recall when the military ship disappeared?
Benjamin: I do. It was the day after the < Great Catastrophe > approached.
All: !
Akira: After the < Great Catastrophe >......
Chloe: Yeah. Maybe the military airship wasn’t stolen after all.
Benjamin: What do you mean? Does the < Great Catastrophe > have anything to do with this?
Arthur: I can’t say for sure, but there are mysterious incidents occurring all around the world due to how close the < Great Catastrophe > came.
Benjamin: Due to the < Great Catastrophe >....? I didn’t know that was possible.
Arthur: Yes. We’ve been receiving many bizarre reports.
I think it’s plenty possible that the military airship was similarly influenced and spun out of control.
Benjamin: ....It’s still hard for me to believe that, but I guess it makes sense. That ship is fueled by mana stones, after all.
I spent so much time wondering who hijacked that ship, how they hijacked it — and for what purpose.
Mister Benjamin nods, and then casts a suspicious look at Arthur.
Benjamin: This is weird. We’re having a normal conversation......
Arthur: Huh?
Benjamin: The guy who sat next to me at a bar started chatting with me out of nowhere, made flowers blossom in my hair, and then clapped his hands in delight.
Compared to him, you’re strangely normal. You’re too proper. Are you really a Western wizard?
Arthur: C-certainly! I’m a good Western wizard of society!
(Ring)
Arthur rings his handbell in a hurry.
Maybe Cain and Riquet are trying to help him out — they begin ringing their handbells too, so now the room is really noisy.
Benjamin: What’s going on with all this ringing!?
Rustica: Western wizards love fun and cheer, after all.
Benjamin: These guys don’t look like they’re having any fun......
Akira: Um, excuse me.
If it’s gone out of control, does that mean there are no passengers on the military airship at the moment?
Shylock: That would be the worst possible scenario. It would be an unleashed beast, void of reason.
Cain: That’s terrible.
Riquet: We need to stop the ship right away, before it burns anything else to the ground!
Arthur: That’s right. People will die if what happened in the remote forest occurs near a village or town. We need to stop it no matter what.
Chloe: But the ship was built from Murr’s blueprint, right? I bet it’s powerful.
Oz: We’ll simply smash it to smithereens.
Akira: O-Oz....wald.
Oz: ..........
(Ring)
Seeing my hesitation at his efficient but violent suggestion, Oz rings his handbell and looks at me as if to ask, "Is this what you want?" But that’s not the point.
Cain: I mean, sure, turning the whole ship into dust is a solution, but.....
Benjamin: You’ve gotta be kidding me! No way. That ship is the embodiment of Western technology.
It carries our blood, knowledge, and time. Though I guess you wizards would never understand.
Rustica: So it’s a precious ship.
Benjamin: ....Precious enough that I’d dedicate my whole life to it.
That line is enough to tell me how he feels about this ship that he’ll risk his life for.
Chloe: Let’s think of a different solution! A better solution where we won’t have to ruin Mister Benjamin’s precious ship.
Cain: We just need to stop the ship. Any suggestions?
Shylock: If it was influenced by the < Great Catastrophe >, it’s natural to think that something happened to the magical science machinery.
Benjamin: The magical science machinery....? Unfortunately, that’s not part of my job.
Akira: (I mean, we do have a professional right here, but it looks like Murr doesn’t remember a thing....)
It looks like Chloe has the same idea; he too gazes at Murr.
Chloe: Hey, maybe if we show Murr some things, it’ll help trigger his memory?
Stuff related to military airships.... Like blueprints, or the secret base on Langrenus Island.
Rustica: That’s an excellent idea. It would be a great help if we could borrow the wisdom of the great inventor Murr.
Cain: True. The fastest way is to ask the very guy who wrote up the blueprint. Hey, Murr.
Murr: What now?
Benjamin: Murr....? Murr himself....? Are you telling me he’s the Murr?
Murr: Which Murr is the Murr? Want me to give you a slice of the Murr you like?
Benjamin: ...You’ve got to be kidding. This guy made that miraculous blueprint!?
Shylock: I know you don’t want to believe it, but he’s the same man. He fell in love with the moon and got too close to the secret of the < Great Catastrophe >; as a result, his soul was shattered.
Benjamin: He fell in love with the < Great Catastrophe > and his soul was shattered....?
What the hell’s wrong with him? He might be a genius, but in the end, he’s just a wizard. What a lunatic.
The disgust is apparent in his acrimonious statement. I had a sense of this from his earlier statements too, but Mister Benjamin doesn’t seem to think fondly of wizards.
