Ballad of the Dreaming Pilot | Chapter 6

Chapter 5 << | index | >> Chapter 7

We all follow Mister Benjamin through the city.

(Rustle)

Man: What’s taking you so long? Hurry up, will you?

Man: Oh, come on, the road’s real bumpy.

The men pass by us, pushing a heavy cart along. It’s loaded with mana stones.

Akira: Woah, that’s a lot of stones..... The Northern wizards would probably be delighted.

Oz: The stones here are all of poor quality; they would mean nothing to powerful wizards.

Akira: I see. I can’t really tell the difference, but what are high-quality mana stones like?

Oz: If I turn to stone, I will probably be of high quality.

Akira: I-I see.....
(Oz isn’t just a threat to the Northern wizards: they must also want to defeat him to obtain his stone.....)

Oz: Battles between wizards are simple. One is simply stronger than the other.
But human conflict is more complex. It becomes a battle of numbers, not strength.
If I were Arthur or Cain, I would burn this city to the ground. But they will not. Because that won’t be the end of it.

A group of workers laugh as they exit the factory, wiping sweat from their brows.
Yelling voices. Footsteps. The clanging of machinery. This city is filled with the sounds of work.
As far as I know, this is what they call liveliness.

The shipyard lies at the edge of the island. Thanks to our outfits, we enter the building with no trouble.

Chloe: Rustica, I don’t think you should be sitting there......

Rustica: Don’t worry, it’s fine. Though this chair is a little shaky.

Benjamin: That’s not a chair, that’s a toolkit!

Murr: Hmm?

Murr stares intently at the blueprint he created.

Akira: What do you think, Murr? Do you notice anything?

Murr: Hm.... Ah, right here!

Chloe: Have you figured something out?

Murr: It’s totally outdated! And inefficient! I’d reject this idea now!
And this part, too — anyone could come up with this! It’s boring. Order isn’t the answer to everything. Why’d he do this?

Cain: I mean, you’re the guy who drew the blueprint.

Murr: ....Huh? I never designed this part. What’s it used for?

The moment Murr points it out on the blueprint, Mister Benjamin stiffens.

Benjamin: That’s.... That’s nothing. It’s just a storage room.

Murr: A storage room? Ahaha! You’re funny!
This is a highly critical area of the ship’s design. If you dedicate this much space to it, you’re going to run into trouble adjusting the overall balance of the ship. I bet it took a lot of effort to design this.

Benjamin: ..........

Arthur: What do you mean, Murr?

Murr: No sane man would build a storage room here!

Shylock: That’s incredibly convincing coming from a lunatic like you.
Murr aside, Mister Benjamin looks like a perfectly sane man. If he didn’t build a storage room, then what did he make?

Riquet: Mister Benjamin, are they telling the truth?

Cain: Answer us truthfully. What is this area of the blueprint used for?

Benjamin: ........A weapon.
It’s loaded with our country’s newest massive weapon.

The air freezes: we’re all lost for words.

Arthur: Is that what burned that remote region of Central Country to the ground....?

Chloe: No way....! Why....

Benjamin: I never wanted to load it with a weapon! But the military wouldn’t let me build this ship without it.
I wanted to build this ship, no matter the cost!

(Rumble)

Benjamin exclaims. The next moment, a giant shadow looms over us, and a roaring sound echoes from above.

Arthur: What’s with this sound....?

Murr: Hey, look up!

Riquet: Is that a flying ship?

Benjamin: That’s it! That’s the flying airship I built!

Chloe: Why is it here....!?

Rustica: Perhaps the airship missed this island the same way humans yearn to return home.

Murr: That’s not it.
The gunnery is in motion: it’s a sign that this ship is preparing to attack.

Riquet: No way.... Is it going to attack this island!?

Shylock: It’s headed straight for the center of the island.

Benjamin: No way! Oh my god.... This place is gonna become a sea of fire!

Cain: Save the mourning for later! We’re stopping that ship!

Arthur: Sir Sage, please join me on my broom. I will make sure to protect you.

Akira: Thank you. Please.

Oz: Arthur.
If this city burns to the ground, there will be one less threat to your country. Are you still going to save it?

Arthur: This town is filled with people who work hard day after day, just as we do.
There are no borders that separate those who live each day to the fullest. Their lives are what I want to protect.

Oz: ..........

(Footsteps)

Benjamin’s monologue: The wizards take to the skies on their brooms. In order to save this island where I live. ....In order to stop the ship that I made.
I’d always dreamed of flying. But only birds and wizards could make such a wish come true. With neither wings nor magic, humans can only gaze up at the skies they dream of.
We, too, should be able to fly. If we fervently reach for the skies, we should be able to grasp our dreams. Even if we have neither wings nor magic.

Benjamin: ....I.....

Benjamin’s monologue: —What was my dream for that ship?
