Town of Ice | Main Episode
MahoYaku Masterpost & Translator's Notes
Thank you K for providing this translation!
CHAPTER 1
Akira: We’ve arrived at the Northern tower. Today I’d like the Northern wizards to head to the Town of Ice.
White: The Town of Ice? That’s where we Northern twins live together in perfect harmony.
Akira: Is that so?
Snow: Yes, that’s right. We live alongside humans, who settled there under our protection.
Bradley: That means it’s territory under the twins’ rule. It’d be rude for us to crash the place uninvited.
Mithra: That’s right. Don’t mind us; Snow and White should feel free to solve this problem on their own.
Owen: I’ll let you guys take all the credit this time. We should show some respect to the elderly, after all.
Snow & White: We’re not grandpas!
White: Ohoho. Don’t be shy. We’ll give you a warm welcome into our home.
Now, Sir Sage. What kind of mysterious incidents are happening in the Town of Ice?
Akira: Actually, it was more of a request for you two to visit the Town of Ice, Snow and White.
The townspeople are worried because they haven’t seen you since the < Great Catastrophe > attacked......
White: Ohoho. Now that you mention it, we haven’t had a chance to return. Perhaps we should go to put them at ease.
Snow: Yes, that’s right. It’s been a while; let’s go back home.
White: By the way, Sir Sage. When we go to the Town of Ice, you should read the "Compendium of Magic" that we have in our home.
Akira: Read the "Compendium of Magic"?
White: I say read, but all you have to do is open the book. It’s a convenient, kind system for sages who can’t read the writing of this world.
If you envision a wizard’s future appearance, it will naturally appear on the pages in front of you.
Akira: I see. The "Compendium of Magic" — I’ll take a look when we get to the Town of Ice.
White: Well then, let’s head out!
✦✧☾✧✦
Akira: So this is the Town of Ice...... The climate of Northern Country is harsh, but even so, there are more houses here than I expected.
Bradley: Hmph. That’s because humans drift here seeking the twins’ protection.
Akira: Seeking protection......?
White: Ohoho. The marsha fruit seems to be thriving. You should eat some, Sir Sage.
CHAPTER 2
White flies into the sky, plucking a hard, red fruit the size of a clenched fist from the branches of a large tree.
He splits it open — inside, the fruit is densely crammed with small seeds like rubies.
Akira: (It looks like fish roe...... Or maybe more like pomegranate seeds?)
> Option: I eat the marsha fruit one seed at a time.
White: Ohoho. What a refined way of eating. That’s how Figaro ate it as well.
There’s something called the marsha divination. By that measure, it seems that what you lack is nerve.
Akira: Nerve......
> Option: I stuff the entire fruit into my mouth in one bite.
White: Ohoho. What an energetic way of eating. Oz used to eat like that too.
There’s something called the marsha divination. By that measure, it seems that what you lack is the ability to plan.
Akira: The ability to plan......
I stare fixedly at the fruit. It is so sour that I shudder, but it also tastes sharp and nutritious.
White: Sour, isn’t it? The marsha fruit is robust. It can flower and bear fruit in both hot and cold climates.
Snow: It’s also known as the blessed children’s fruit; it bears a wish for the town to be as overflowing with children as the marsha fruit is packed with seed.
Children of the Town of Ice: Sir Snow, Sir White!
As we talk, I hear the voices of children. They come running up to us, clad in furs.
Children of the Town of Ice: Welcome home! Sir Snow, Sir White!
Snow: There, there. Have you been good children?
Children of the Town of Ice: We’ve been really good! And we’ll continue to be good children too! Please protect us!
White: There, there. We love children. As long as you’re good children, we’ll protect you.
The children bow at the smiling twins before running off cheerfully.
Catching sight of the twins, the adults too come to a stop and bow deeply. I can sense their gratitude, as well as respect and affection, for the twins.
Akira: Snow and White are truly beloved by the townspeople.
White: Everyone wishes for our protection. You see, it’s hard for humans to survive in Northern Country.
Snow: We’re especially mild-mannered amongst the Northern wizards. That’s why we’re so popular.
Mithra: Who are you calling mild-mannered?
CHAPTER 3
Owen: Hmph. It’s only because Snow and White are so indulgent towards humans.
Bradley: If you ask me, it’s a pretty cold-hearted indulgence. They build a nest, and then abandon it when they lose interest. I’d say bugs have more heart than they do.
I frown at their unsettling remarks. White looks out across the Town of Ice with a wry smile.
White: Bradley is right. The Town of Ice is not the first town that we have protected.
In the past, we lived further into the North. We’ve lived next to Oz’s castle, and we’ve also lived in a seaside town by the freezing ocean.
Each time we moved, we planted a marsha tree. After all, it can bear fruit anywhere.
Akira: ......Why won’t you stay in one place?
Snow: Too many people gather around us. Humans hear rumours and flock to us in great numbers, seeking to depend on us.
As humans gather, all sorts of things become more and more complicated, troublesome, and confusing. And eventually, we can no longer enjoy our desired lifestyle.
White: And that’s when it’s time to say farewell. The people who live in this town know that as well. That’s why they make themselves pleasant to us.
Snow: And that’s why they don’t easily welcome people in. Here, Sir Sage. Look over there.
Snow points to the townspeople arguing with a family of travelers. It looks to be a family of a father, a mother, and a young boy.
Traveler father: Please, I beg you. Let us stay in this town. I’ll do any kind of job.
Traveler mother: A magical beast appeared in the village where we lived, and the wizard who had been protecting us disappeared.
We heard that Sir Snow and Sir White are kind towards children. This boy is an intelligent child.
Come on now, greet them.
Traveler child: ...... Please, let us stay here. I can read and write and do a little math.
Citizens of the Town of Ice No, no way. Sir Snow and Sir White won’t be happy if we bring in more townspeople.
Traveler mother: I’m begging you, please...... If you turn us away, we have nowhere to stay.
Citizens of the Town of Ice That’s enough! Here, take some food! Now get the hell out of this town!
I turn to look at White, shocked at the raised voices.
Knowing how kind he is, I thought he would surely step in.
But he simply continues to gaze at the scene, a gentle smile on his face.
Bradley: Tsk......
CHAPTER 4
Bradley: Tsk......
Bradley spits in disgust, and walks towards the family of travelers.
White: Where do you think you’re going, Bradley?
Bradley: Shut up, you old geezer. Mild-mannered wizards who love children — I don’t care whether that’s true.
Merchants who sell pearls will knock on the doors of rich families who love pearls. Without caring if their wares are genuine or fake.
I don’t really understand the meaning behind Bradley’s words. But his irritation is apparent.
White smiles calmly. His smile is at once fatherly, motherly, and childlike.
It is as striking, captivating, and resolute as the red marsha fruit, pregnant with countless fertile seeds.
White: Oh Bradley. You’re still so young.
You believe that your heart and your strength can change the fates of the few.
You believe that humans are weaker than wizards. But that is a huge mistake.
Humans, like the marsha fruit, can flourish anywhere—be it hot or cold climates. But what about us?
Even if we do find something truly beloved — no matter how dear it is, we can never even take root.
Snow: ............
Snow keeps silent, even though he looks to be on the verge of speaking.
Before I know it, the family of travelers is gone. Snow starts to fall, obscuring our surroundings.
Bradley: Tsk...... Damn, I have to find them before I lose track of them.
White: It’s fine, Bradley. This is our town. We’ll see this matter through to the end.
White takes my hand in one of his, and holds Snow’s hand with the other.
White: Sir Sage, Snow. Lend me your strength. Let’s go and look for the family of travelers.
Akira: ......Of course.
Snow: Yes, yes.
CHAPTER 5
Traveler mother: ......Damn it...... "Snow and White love children" — what a joke. We didn’t even get a house to stay in!
Traveler father: We went through all this trouble to drag along some penniless, dying kid! Why the hell couldn’t you be friendly!
Traveler child: ......I’m sorry......
Traveler father: Ugh, man...... What are we supposed to do now......
Traveler child: ......Um, when will my family come back to life?
You told me that if we came to Sir Snow and Sir White’s town, I could ask them to bring back my real family, since they fell into the frozen lake, right?
That’s why we pretended to be a family, and I’ve been so hungry, and I followed you two here while carrying all that heavy luggage, but......
Traveler father: Shut up, just keep quiet for a while!
Traveler child: ............
White: Ohoho. It’s just as Bradley predicted. You are fake pearl merchants.
Snow: In order to obtain our favor, you’ve snatched a passing child and brought him along.
Traveler father: ......Snow and White!? O-of course not! We just felt such sorrow and pity for this child......
Traveler mother: I beg you, please give us a home! I’m sick of being hungry, of magical beasts and bandits! Here, greet them!
Traveler child: ......These two are runaway criminals! They’re not my family! Please bring my family back to life......!
Traveler father: You—....
Snow & White: << Noscommia >>
The moment the twins chant their spell, the father — who had his hand raised to hit the child — and mother both disappear instantaneously.
Perhaps they were banished somewhere...... All that remains is the glittering snowflakes in the air.
The child sits down heavily on the snow, dazed, the tension leaving his body.
Tears spilling from his eyes, he slowly folds his hands together as if in prayer.
Traveler child: Sir Snow, Sir White...... Please, I beg of you. Please bring my family back to life.
Snow: Ohoho. It can’t be done.
Traveler child: ......... Then why did I leave my hometown, and travel all the way to the Town of Ice......
White: Ohoho. How would we know!
Traveler child: ............
CHAPTER 6
Brushing off the question with a laugh, White approaches the child.
As he walks, he assumes his adult form without even chanting his spell.
He gently lifts the child in his arms, placing the red marsha fruit in his small palm.
White: But if you so desire, I will grant you this marsha fruit and a warm home in the Town of Ice.
I am White. I am a ghost who tried to kill what he loved most in this world; in return, I was killed instead.
Just like your family, I cannot come back to life — and just like you, I do not know why I continue to make my place here.
If it’s agreeable to you, I can love you, for a brief, fickle moment in time.
The child gazes steadily at White. Eventually, he wraps his arms around White, looking at once resigned and at peace.
The marsha seeds spilling over from the child’s hand splatter across the snowy field like fresh blood.
Striking, captivating, and resolute.
Traveler child: ......Yes.
Without my noticing, Snow has also taken on his adult form. He caresses the child’s head and smiles.
Snow: You seem like an intelligent child. You remind me of Figaro when he was still wandering aimlessly. You can read and write, and do some math, right?
Traveler child: I lied. I’m sorry.
White: It’s fine, it’s fine. Shrewdness is also a strength. We tell lies too.
White takes the child’s hand, and gently, playfully presses a kiss to the back of it.
When I look at his figure, I can’t help but see him as a kind person. Even if he is a ghost. Even if he is a liar.
I sense someone approaching me, and turn around to find the Northern wizards. Bradley speaks, shrugging his shoulders.
Bradley: They beat me to it. I was gonna make him a full-fledged bandit.
Owen: But you’re going back to jail.
Mithra: I don’t really like that fruit since it’s so sour, but now I feel like eating some.
They’re all just saying whatever comes to mind. The sound of children’s laughter resounds from the Town of Ice.
So, after hesitating, I decide to laugh as well.
The twins exchange a smile above the child’s head, like a happy fairytale, or a chilling ghost story.
And they walk towards the town that they will one day abandon.
