Town of Clouds | Main Episode

MahoYaku Masterpost & Translator's Notes

CHAPTER 1

Akira: We’ve arrived at the Southern Tower. Today I’d like the Southern wizards to head to the Town of Clouds.

Mitile: The Town of Clouds? That’s the town where we used to live.

Akira: Oh, really?

Rutile: Dr. Figaro’s clinic is nearby too. Mister Leno’s farm is a little while off, though.
Lennox: Yes.

Figaro: It feels like going home, honestly. What happened in the Town of Clouds?

Akira: I’m not too sure about the details either, but.... I hear there’s a strange lost child in town.

Mitile: Lost child?

Rutile: Oh no.... Then we need to bring them home.

Lennox: Maybe they’re from a family that only recently moved South? Southern Country is still developing, so there are many people who move in from different regions.

Figaro: Are they looking after the child at the town hall or the school?

Akira: Well, you see.... He says he wants to go home, but then he just disappears.

Mitile: That’s strange... So is he lost or not?

> Option: If he’s lost, I hope we can help him out.

Mitile: I agree. Maybe he got separated from his family because of the < Great Catastrophe >.
I hope we can reunite them.

> Option: If he’s up to something suspicious, we need to catch him.

Mitile: I agree.... If he’s trying to cause mischief in our town, I’ll never forgive him.
I’ll protect the townspeople!

> Option: Have you ever gotten lost, Mitile?

Mitile: Eh....!
Ah.... Um, yes, a number of times......

Rutile: The local police once took him into custody. He did his best not to cry the whole time he was there, but the moment he saw my face, he started bawling because he was so relieved.

Mitile: D-don’t tell Sir Sage these childhood stories!

Mitile: Oh, right, Sir Sage. This has nothing to do with our mission, but the Town of Clouds has the perfect climate for harvesting magical herbs.
That’s why it’s a great place to make magic potions. I’ll show you my lab, so please try making potions with me.

Akira: Magic potions... Can humans make them too?

Mitile: The other wizards and I will support you, so don’t worry! If everything goes well, you might end up with a really powerful potion.

Akira: Making magical potions, huh. Got it. I’ll give it a try.

CHAPTER 2

Akira: So this is the Town of Clouds in Southern Country.

Mitile: Yes. I’ll take you around while everyone else is speaking with the townspeople!
Our house is over that way, and our school is over there. Dr. Figaro’s clinic is on the hill over there.
That’s the path to the big city. It passes through the vast open wilderness, so we always fly on our brooms, but humans travel by stagecoach.

Akira: Stagecoach?

Mitile: It’s a big carriage that stops at predetermined locations.

Akira: So I guess it’s like a bus. That sounds fun!

Mitile: It’s a small town, but everyone here is so kind, and we all get along. It’s a lovely place.

Akira: Are there any other wizards your age, Mitile?

Mitile: There are no other wizards my age in this town, but.... I did meet one once.
He visited with his family on a stagecoach. I wonder how he’s doing now....

Rutile: Mitile. Sir Sage.

Mitile: Nii-sama! Did you get to speak to the townspeople?

Rutile: Yes. Apparently he wasn’t exactly a lost child.

Lennox: He goes about inviting the children to play, but when the grown-ups come by to take him in, he disappears.
There’s a long scarf draped around his neck that flutters in the wind as he dashes away.

Mitile: A long scarf.....

Akira: So who in the world is he? Figaro, do you know?

Figaro: He’s probably a Cometus.... Part of a clan of traveling wizards.

Mitile: A clan of traveling wizards?

Figaro: Yes. Let’s sit down; I’ll explain it to you. We should take a break over there.

CHAPTER 3

Townsperson: Welcome, Sir Sage! Here’s some tea made from the herbs in our field.
Akira: Thank you. ...Wow, it’s delicious!

Townsperson: Hello, Sir Sage! I spotted a horse-shaped cloud today, so it’s definitely gonna be a good day.

Townsperson: Mister Lennox, you got even taller. Do you have a wife yet? I’d love it if you married our daughter — it’d be great to have someone as strong as you around.

Lennox: I haven’t gotten taller. Thank you for the offer, but I’m not quite ready to.....

Townsperson: Yes, that’s right. Dr. Figaro is the one who needs to settle down first.

Figaro: You say that, but you never introduce me to anyone. I might be even more faithful than Leno, you know?

Townsperson: Ahahaha!

Figaro: Hey. That wasn’t a joke.

Mitile: It’s because you’re so frivolous, Dr. Figaro.....

Akira: The townspeople are so friendly.

Rutile: Yes. They’re all wonderful people.

Mitile: So, Dr. Figaro, can you tell us about the clan of traveling wizards?

Figaro: The name says it all. The Cometus clan spend their lives traveling around the world.
People often chase wizards away, you see. So they’ve given up on settling down in one spot, and choose to travel instead.
In the past, there were a couple hundred of them, but I hear their numbers have dwindled to about ten now.

Mitile: But why.....

Figaro: Fewer and fewer wizards are being born each year, while the human population keeps growing. That might make it difficult for traveling wizards.
You can identify them by their scarves fluttering in the breeze.
Apparently, their policy is to leave a place before their long scarves are colored brown by the dirt of the earth.
So if the mysterious lost child turns out to be a child of the Cometus clan, we can just leave him alone; he’ll leave eventually.

Lennox: That’s good to know.

CHAPTER 4

Rutile: But doesn’t he get lonely, not having a home and all?

Figaro: There are plenty of people out there who don’t have homes.

Mitile: I... want to meet this boy.

Akira: Eh....?

Mitile: Because I might know him.

Rutile: The traveling wizard?

Mitile: I told you about the young wizard who visited us on the stagecoach, right?

Rutile: Oh! The boy who immediately left town when you tried to invite him to our place?

Mitile: Both he and his family wore long scarves that almost touched the ground.

✦✧☾✧✦

Akira: Mitile!

Mitile: Sir Sage.....

Akira: We haven’t had much luck finding the traveling wizard... the Cometus boy.

Mitile: Yes.... According to the townspeople, he appears out of nowhere when there are children playing together, but.
Maybe he already left for a different town, like Dr. Figaro said......

Akira: What kind of boy was this Cometus child you met, Mitile....?

Mitile: Um, he looked kind of like Riquet, but he had a bit of a foul mouth — he was kind of like Mister Bradley.
But he was very kind... I flew through the sky for the first time in my life when I was with him.
My brother had told me, “You’ve only just learned how to fly, so don’t fly on your own,” but....
I broke my word for the first time in my life. My heart was racing, and I was terrified, but I also felt like I had grown up, just a little.

Akira: I understand.... I felt the same way when I snuck out to play, and kept it a secret from my parents. I felt guilty, but I was so excited.
It turned out they knew what I was up to, and they scolded me for it later, though.

Mitile: My brother scolded me too. But I still felt my heart racing at what the boy told me.

CHAPTER 5

Akira: What did he say to you?

Mitile: Mitile, you’re a good boy, but if you’re a wizard, you should know what freedom is.
I know it might be a bad thing, but — I feel the same whenever I’m talking to Riquet.
Because it seems like the people who raised Riquet were always telling him about all the things he wasn’t allowed to do.... So I want to teach him the same thing.

Akira: Mitile....

Mitile: Ah...! Sir Sage, look over there....!

Akira: A boy wearing a long scarf....!

✦✧☾✧✦

Akira: A boy wearing a long scarf.... Is he a traveling wizard from the Cometus clan...?

Cometus child: Hey, Mitile.

Mitile: Do you... Remember me?

Cometus child: I sure do. You’ve grown taller.

Mitile: But you’re still a child.....

Cometus child: I’ve been like this for over a hundred years.

Mitile: How are your father and mother doing?

Cometus child: They turned to stone. I’m the last remaining Cometus out there.
The children of Southern Country are all so honest and cute. That’s why I wanted them to play with me. But I’ll be leaving now.

Mitile: Y... You should come visit our place. I’ll introduce you to my brother and the others. Let’s eat dinner together.

Cometus child: I’ll save it for another day. This place is so welcoming that I feel like my scarf is going to turn brown.

Mitile: I see....

Cometus child: I was sad to see that you weren’t here anymore, Mitile, but it also made me happy.

Mitile: Huh....?

Cometus child: You went out on a journey, Mitile. You’re now a wizard who knows freedom.
Mitile: ....Yeah!

CHAPTER 6

Mitile: I became a Sage’s wizard, you see. I’ve visited lots of amazing places, and witnessed many wonderful things.
And this is our Sage!

Akira: Ah.... Hello, I’m the Sage. I’m glad to meet you, Mitile’s friend.

Cometus child: I’m glad I got to meet you too.
This is goodbye. Hey, Mitile. Bless my future travels with your magic.

Mitile: Got it!

Cometus child: Do you remember the law of the Cometus clan?

Mitile: I do. I won’t say goodbye.

Cometus child: That’s right. We’ll meet again.

Mitile: We’ll meet again! Take care, and have a wonderful journey!

✦✧☾✧✦

Lennox: So the Cometus child already left on his journey?

Rutile: We didn’t get to invite him over again. Make sure you bring him along next time you meet, okay? And ask him what his favorite food is.

Mitile: Yes!

Figaro: But he’s the last remaining Cometus, huh.... I guess they’re fated to die out.

Rutile: Dr. Figaro! Why would you say that in front of Mitile....

Figaro: Oh, no, I’m still talking about the distant future, you know.

Mitile: I understand....
But even if he turns to stone one day, I feel like that won’t be the end of the Cometus clan.

Lennox: Why do you say that?

Mitile: Because there will always be wizards who love travels — and freedom.

Akira: You’re right.... I hope you get to meet him again, Mitile.

Mitile: Yes! We’ll meet again one day!
