The Bonds We Formed, Like Magic | Chapter 1
| index | >> Chapter 2
Murr: Shylock! Shylock, look!
It’s a shooting star! There’s a star falling from the sky!
And in a few days, the Venator meteor shower will arrive!
Shylock: It’s come around already? No matter how much the sights on earth change, the sights of the sky are ever-unchanging....
Murr: Nothing is unchanging! Stars, too, die. And so will my beloved < Great Catastrophe > one day.
Shylock: As will you and I. And eventually, this world.
Even though we know that it will one day end, we still attempt to save this dying world....
We certainly hold on to quite the cumbersome contradiction.
Murr: Life exists to rebel against order! To be more precise, it attempts to sustain order amidst a world where disorder is the order of law!
It must be because we have memories.
Shylock: Memories?
Murr: That’s right!
Look, Shylock! The memories of the stars are falling!
Countless memories of stars will rain upon us, changing this world!
Welcome! Welcome home! Ah, yes, that’s right....
We were one!
✦✧☾✧✦
Akira: The Venator meteor shower?
Arthur: Yes. It’s the most famous celestial event in our world, aside from the attack of the < Great Catastrophe >.
Arthur explains the Venator meteor shower to me on our walk.
Arthur: You can witness the Venator meteor shower from anywhere in the world.
It’s also frequently referenced in history books across each country.
It’s quite moving — gazing up at the same sight that the great minds from the far, distant past, once witnessed.
Akira: I agree....
I nod in response to Arthur’s profound commentary, but to me, wizards feel the same as those great minds.
They’ve been alive since the far, distant past — as old as the great minds in the history books.
Arthur, the prince of Central Country, is still only 17 years old. But in these very magic headquarters...
There are many long-lived wizards.
✦✧☾✧✦
Nero: Sigh, I can’t believe it.... I screwed up at this age.....
The one sighing over there is a 600 year old wizard.
✦✧☾✧✦
Faust: Oh, don’t be so gloomy. I like the burnt parts of bread.
The one who likes the burnt parts of bread is a 400 year old wizard.
Shylock: Good morning.... Oh, my. That’s quite the fragrance of wheat.
The one who woke up past noon as if it were still bright and early is a 1500 year old wizard.
Faust: It was delicious, with nice burnt edges.
Nero: Don’t tell him that I burned it.....
Shylock: I’m looking forward to trying some. Should I add jam? Or would olive oil be better?
Nero: I’d recommend either. If you’re gonna use jam, try the marmalade.
Faust: The burnt bits are hard, so I think olive oil is the better choice.
Nero: So they were hard to bite into....
Faust: Fufu. They were delicious.
Shylock: Oh dear. Which should I choose...?
I feel at ease when I’m with them.
Because they make me feel like it’s okay to be disappointed when I burn my bread; it’s okay to go back and forth over whether I should eat bread with jam or olive oil.
✦✧☾✧✦
I peer into the magic headquarters through the windows as Arthur and I return from our walk.
He tells me more about the Venator meteor shower as we pass through the lounge.
Arthur: The Venator meteor shower was discovered ages ago; people have been observing it since the ancient past.
That is why some call it by another name:
"The meteor rain of lineage." Specifically, it is known as the meteor rain of lineage between masters and apprentices of magic.
Akira: A meteor rain of lineage, between masters and apprentices of magic....
Arthur: Yes. Wizards live very long lives.
As we study with our masters, we may learn about the sights and scenes that our masters have witnessed, but....
Oftentimes, such sights have been weathered away, and the apprentice cannot see them for themselves.
But because celestial events do not change as easily, they are akin to the bonds between masters and apprentices.
Akira: So they call it the meteor rain of lineage because both the master and apprentice can witness the same sight.
Arthur: That’s right. Isn’t it a lovely phrase?
Akira: Did you learn about it from Oz? You’re Oz’s apprentice, right, Arthur?
Arthur laughs happily at my question.
But his eyes wander, as if he’s searching for an answer.
Arthur: I wonder... I do believe I’m Sir Oz’s apprentice, but I am also the only one who claims that title.
Sir Oz raised me and taught me magic.
But he said it was to turn me to stone so he could consume me.
And that he taught me magic so that other wizards could not easily turn me to stone.
Akira: Did Oz really say that to you....?
I furrow my brows in pity for the young Arthur.
I believe Oz treasures Arthur — he seems so special to him that it’s hard for me to imagine that he uttered those cold words.
But Oz also seems to be perplexed: as if he doesn’t know how to interact with those who are special and precious to him.
Akira: (Well, he was called the demon king....)
With a hint of loneliness, Arthur flashes me a pure and refined smile.
Arthur: But I will continue to devote myself, so that I can one day proudly proclaim that I am Oz’s apprentice.
And I wish to see the meteor rain of lineage — the Venator meteor shower — once more with him.
I nod deeply as I imagine the meteor shower I have yet to witness.
Countless shooting stars that rain across the night sky. Infinite shining lights.
Akira: (The meteor rain of lineage....)
(There are a number of Sage’s wizards who have tied bonds between master and apprentice.)
(I’m not very familiar with relationships like that — they weren’t common in my world. The same goes for master-servant relationships.)
(Bonds unfamiliar to me; bonds that tie wizards together....)
(I wonder what they must feel like?)
Arthur: According to the astronomers’ report, we should be able to witness the Venator meteor shower in just a few days this year.
Akira: In just a few days... We’ll be visiting Borda Island around then.
Arthur: That’s right! It will be the perfect timing for the inauguration of the new lord.
Akira: I’m looking forward to visiting Borda Island with everyone!
I laugh and think about Borda Island.
✦✧☾✧✦
Borda Island is a beautiful island — one of many that lie in the westernmost region of Western Country.
Blue skies, white sands, and the beautiful rhythms of the waves. Back in my world, it would’ve been a top-class resort destination.
A Western noble who possessed the island had passed on the title — or something — and Borda Island was to welcome a new lord of the castle.
✦✧☾✧✦
The new lord’s name is Dianne Chenon. I hear she is a young lady skilled in the martial arts.
I’ve never met her before, but Arthur showed me the lovely invitation she sent him the other day.
I can’t read the letters of this world, but I could tell her handwriting was beautiful, like flowing water. The letter said:
"To the dear Sage and his Wizards who have saved this world, with my utmost gratitude and respect."
"My name is Dianne Chenon. With the former lord, Marius Chenon, having retired from his post due to old age, I have been appointed to serve as the new lord of the castle."
"To offer my greetings as the new lord of the castle, I wish to invite all my dear friends who love Borda Island to a party."
"Borda Island hosts a wizards’ market; it is a place with deep ties to wizards."
"It would be my honor if the Sage and his Wizards could join us too. We will welcome you with our utmost respect."
Akira: ...There are many who avoid or think poorly of wizards. Yet she called us her friends....
I think we’ll get along with the new lord, Miss Dianne.
Arthur: I agree.
I believe she sent me a separate letter because she was conscious of my status; she came off as a very prudent person.
"I apologize for my brazenness in inviting the prince of Central Country by letter."
"I truly admire your diplomatic efforts to build bridges of trust between wizards and humans."
Akira: Build bridges of trust between wizards and humans.... So she supports a world where wizards and humans can live together in harmony?
Arthur: Yes. I believe she is someone who shares your vision and mine, Sir Sage.
I break out into a smile.
This is a world where wizards exist. They can use strange powers, but that is why humans fear them.
At times, they loathe wizards, to the point where they will turn their knives on them....
And there are wizards who loathe humans; wizards who terrorize them, and make fools of them.
But humans and wizards must overcome their deep divides to defeat the < Great Catastrophe > and protect this world.
Arthur and I dream of building such a world one day.
