Rhapsody of the Sunset-Kissed Greenhouse | Chapter 10

Chapter 9 << | index |

Akira: I wonder what in the world was going on with the orange tree and the miniature garden.....

Faust: Who knows.
Perhaps the spirit of the orange tree became one with the miniature garden, and as a result realized its wish of meeting its shy friend once more.....
That’s my best guess.
It may have been influenced by the < Great Catastrophe >, but I can’t say for sure.

When Heathcliff and I returned, the miniature garden was completely empty.
The faint glow of magic and Heathcliff’s presence had both disappeared completely. The orange tree was also gone.

Akira: (....Heathcliff wasn’t the only one who wanted to see all three of them together.)
(The orange tree must have felt the same way — because Heathcliff was precious to him too.)

The miniature garden that brought their desires to life is now empty.
But I know that Heathcliff and his treasured friends were all laughing together in that orangery of dreams.

Akira: (Maybe the miniature garden fulfilled its role when their dream came true.)

While I’m lost in thought, Cain taps my shoulder.

Cain: Heath said he was gonna plant another orange tree in the greenhouse.
He’ll make sure it takes root this time.

Akira: .....! Really!

A full-grown orange tree, bathed in the evening sunlight of the orangery.
The sight we witnessed in the miniature garden will one day become reality. Because it’s neither a dream nor an illusion: it’s the future Heathcliff will grasp with his own hands.
And that is when he’ll meet him again: his precious, long-time, secret friend.

✦✧☾✧✦

Cain: Don’t be too nervous.

Arthur: Just remember our training.

Riquet: Don’t worry. We’ll be right here to support you.

Heathcliff: Y-yeah....!

The Central wizards surround Heathcliff, who still looks nervous, and cheer him on.
Now that Shino is back, they’re trying to resume their lessons on protective magic.

Nero: You ready?

Shino: Let’s do this.

The Eastern wizards call out to each other and prepare their magic tools.

Shino: << Matztzāh Sudipas >>

Nero: << Adnodus Omnis >>

Heathcliff follows suit.

Heathcliff: << Repsevaivulp Sonus >> !

Each of their spells unleashes a ball of light; the light gathers to a central point and grows in a giant circle that covers the entirety of Blanchett Castle.

Arthur & Riquet: !

Akira: This....

Cain: We got it!

Heathcliff: Yes!!

Everyone exclaims — Heathcliff’s voice is the loudest and most joyful of all.
We just can’t help but smile.

Heathcliff: ..........Ah.

I think he noticed us smiling at him — Heathcliff turns bright red and begins to lower his arm raised high in the air.

Shino: Heh. How’s that, Oz? Flawless, right?

Oz: << Vox Nox >>

A bolt of lightning strikes across Blanchett Castle, and the protective spell shatters like glass in an instant.

Eastern wizards: Huh—-!?

The Eastern wizards stand there dumbfounded, while the Central wizards nod understandingly.

Arthur: I know how you feel.

Cain: We felt the exact same way when he destroyed our barrier.

Riquet: Geez, Oz. You’re so awful.

Oz: That is the kind of training this is.

Shino: But Heath finally succeeded.....
I’ve had it. I’ll be your opponent.

Heathcliff: H-hey, Shino!

Nero: Hey now, stop that. Don’t pick a fight on your master’s castle grounds.

Shino: I’m doing it to protect my master’s castle. He just ruined our protective barrier.

Oz: That level of magic will not protect the castle.

Shino: What did you just say?

Heathcliff: Shino, calm down!

Nero: Oz, you too. Don’t go provoking him.

Oz: It is the truth.

Nero: Yeah, so that’s what we call provoking.....

Faust: .............

Faust doesn’t stop his students from yelling back and forth; he just stands there, watching over them.

Akira: Aren’t you going to say anything, Faust?

Faust: Oz is the teacher today. I’m just here to observe.

His words may be brusque, but his purple eyes are filled with kindness as he gazes at his students.
That alone is enough to tell me that the trial is now behind us. The cheerful, mundane cries make us so happy.

Cain: Let’s do this, Shino. To protect Blanchett castle.

Heathcliff: That’s right. Our training has just begun.

Nero: This is the practical training you were dying to do. I’ll cook you something nice when we get back.

Shino: Tch.... Fine. I’ll show you.
This time, we’re gonna cast a barrier that Oz can’t break!

Heathcliff: Yeah!

Standing next to a determined Shino, Heathcliff spins around to look at us.

With a brilliant smile identical to that of his friend who waved to us in the miniature garden.

Heathcliff: I’m going to try again. So please watch over me!

We turn around, and we’re faced with mistakes of the past. With scars. With stumbles and falls. With the sight of our cowardly selves huddled on the ground, hugging our knees.
Even if the past is gone, never to return, we know that we can hold hands; we know that we can grip the hands that reach out to help us.
So that next time, we can succeed.
