Etude of the Mischievous Mask | Chapter 5
Chapter 4 << | index | >> Chapter 6
Shylock: I think I can manage that. Chloe, would you like to be a noble's son?
Chloe: Eh, um...
Rustica: Then I want to be the maid.
Murr: Then I'll be the horse drawing the wagon! Neeeeigh!
Shylock: Young master Chloe. Have you finished your homework from yesterday? I'll teach you anything you need to know.
Anything that I can answer... Be it worldly laws, or naughty secrets... I’ll teach you as you like it, young master.
Shylock pushes up his imaginary glasses; he’s surprisingly into this private tutor role.
Rustica: Knock knock. Opens door. That's enough studying for today. I made some delicious pancakes.
Murr: Dudduduh, neeeeigh! It’s time for a ride, time for a ride!
Rustica and Murr are both enthusiastic to join in. Chloe, flustered by the engaged Western wizards, waves his arms while shaking his head.
Chloe: Th-that's not it...! I just wanted to sit down at a desk and study with everyone!
The Western wizards pause for a moment. Oh, I see, they all seem to think.
Murr: Oh, so the normal kind!
Shylock: That is indeed the normal kind.
Rustica: So you meant the normal kind. Okay, let's start with that, then. We can continue this scenario another day.
Chloe: ......That made me weirdly nervous.....

And thus, the Western wizards’ training began.
I observe them from the corner of the classroom. Class for wizards — it sounds exciting.
Shylock: Then let’s begin class.
Rustica: Please take care of us, Mr. Shylock.
Murr: Mr. Shylock~.
Shylock: Fufu. This doesn't feel bad.
Chloe: Mr. Shylock, please take care of me!
Shylock: What would you like me to teach you? Something fun? Something horrifying? Something healing?
Murr: I have a question, Mr. Shylock!
Shylock: Yes, Murr.
Murr: I'd like to know how the < Great Catastrophe > feels about me~~!
Shylock: Your teacher doesn't have the answer to that question. Moreover, the person who tried to discover the answer completely ruined his own soul, so I have no intention of ever finding out. Next question.
Murr: Eeeh~?!
Rustica: I have a question, Mr. Shylock.
Shylock: Yes, Rustica.
Rustica: I'd like you to tell me about your crushes, Mr. Shylock.
Shylock: Mr. Shylock doesn't dislike this kind of gossip, but it's unfortunately not appropriate for this time and place. I'll tell you another time, during private lessons.
Rustica: Private lessons. How exciting.
Shylock: Next.
Chloe: I-I have a question!
Chloe raises his hand enthusiastically. Shylock smiles and points at him with the tip of his pipe.
Shylock: Yes, Chloe. Go on.
Chloe: Um... is there any magic the Western wizards are particularly good at?
Shylock: Good question. Murr, Rustica, what do you think?
Murr: We love flashy things, right! Even if they lack substance, I like stuff that looks fancy!
Rustica: We might be good at creating illusions. Also, transforming into things.
Chloe: Transformation is high-class magic, right? I’m still no good at it....
Shylock: Chloe, you’re good at making clothes with magic, right? That too is a form of transformation.
Western wizards are very interested in others, and we always enjoy a change of pace, so transformation seems to fundamentally suit us.
Shylock’s commentary is fascinating. I raise my hand and join the discussion.
Shylock: Yes, Sir Sage.
Akira: Do the other countries also specialize in magic the same way the West does in transformation?
Shylock: They do. The Northern wizards specialize in attack magic; the Southern wizards specialize in spells that bring about blessings and peace.
The Eastern wizards tend to be good at meticulous magic that requires great focus... The Central wizards are all-rounders.
Akira: I see... Does that have anything to do with how strong your magic is? Are the Western wizards better at transformation than Oz is?
Shylock: The Northern wizards here in the magic headquarters are all more powerful than the wizards from other countries.
But they don’t really like to use magic that they don’t specialize in.
For example, if Mithra wanted to, he could turn into a tiny bird and approach us without any of us noticing.
But he isn’t particularly interested in pretending to be a tiny bird, right? He desires the power of a storm that will fend off a flock of birds.
Akira: But the Western wizards are interested?
Rustica: Yes. I'd be incredibly into it.
Murr: It's fun being a good bird!
Chloe: I can kind of understand that.... It's fun imagining yourself as something different.
Shylock: It’s also fun seeing other people transform, too.
For the Western wizards, transformation is entertainment.
Rustica turns all sorts of things into birds, and Murr turned Drummond into a mouse. I can understand being good at what you like.
Chloe: I want to learn transformation magic too... Can I?
