True Love for the Blossoming Forest | Chapter 1
| index | >> Chapter 2
Shino: Sage. Stop looking around so much. You’re going to get lost. Walk next to me.
Akira: Thank you. There are always so many people walking around during festivals.
Arthur: This is a once-a-year celebration, after all. I think everyone is determined to make it a great success.
The "Seething Town," located in the remote Eastern region of Central Country. We came here to attend their annual Flower Festival.
Akira: You both look great in those outfits. They suit the town’s atmosphere too.
Arthur: Thank you, Sir Sage. You look lovely as well.
Shino: Do I look strong in these clothes?
Akira: Yes, you look very handsome. Like a dignified prince.
Shino: Heh. Must feel nice being surrounded by two princes, Sage.
Akira: (I like how Shino earnestly accepts compliments.)
But wow, it really is a flower festival — all sorts of flowers are in bloom.
These trees with white flowers in particular... I feel like they’re all over town....
I gaze up at the trees overflowing with blossoms. The white petals bloom in hanging clusters.
They might be similar to wisteria flowers from my world. The flowers enveloping the town with their beauty makes for a mystical sight.
Arthur: Isn’t it beautiful? These are called rainflowers1.
Shino: That’s an interesting name. I’ve never seen them in Sherwood Forest.
Arthur: Rainflower — the name speaks for itself. It stems from a story about a time when rain would not fall upon this town.
Akira: When rain would not fall...?
Arthur: Yes. According to the legend, this town once experienced a terrible drought. The crops withered, the people suffered, and the lord of the castle simply didn’t know what to do.
That was when the lord met him in the forest: a white wolf.
Shino: A white wolf?
Arthur: In this town, the white wolf is known as the forest spirit. The troubled lord asked the wolf, "If you are truly a spirit, then please make it rain."
Akira: He was really grasping at straws....
Arthur: He must have been willing to try anything in order to save the people suffering from famine. The lord offered all sorts of rewards to the wolf, hoping to please him.
✦✧☾✧✦
Lord: Spirit of the forest. I beg you to make it rain. If you make my wish come true, we will honor your image as our guardian spirit for eternity.
Is fame alone not enough? Then I can grant you the flesh and blood of my beloved horse that I have treasured for years. Or do you desire treasures and wealth?
You don’t want any of that....? Then I will give you my beloved daughter’s hand in marriage; she is known as the most beautiful princess in these lands. I beg you, please make it rain...!
✦✧☾✧✦
Shino: He offered his own daughter?
Akira: And did it rain...?
Arthur: Yes. It was the first blessed rainfall in weeks. The town was overjoyed. But that night, a white wolf with one eye appeared in front of the lord.
The lord tried to chase him away, but a traveling wizard who was passing by said....
✦✧☾✧✦
Traveling wizard: My lord, that wolf is the spirit of the forest. He sacrificed his eye to the spirit of rain in exchange for this rainfall. The wolf says, fulfill your end of the promise.
Did you make a promise with a white wolf? If you break your promise, the forest will bring great suffering upon your people.
Lord: Th-that can’t be.... I told him I would give him my daughter....! I didn’t think it would actually rain!
✦✧☾✧✦
Arthur: Hearing this, the princess entered the forest and married the spirit in order to save the people and her father.
It’s said that these "rainflowers" began to blossom after the princess disappeared, in her stead.
Akira: I didn’t know these flowers had that kind of story.....
Shino: .......
The flowers that looked so beautiful moments ago suddenly seem ephemeral.
Arthur: The princess is known as the "Tragic Bride," and she is revered by the people to this day. This flower festival is actually a festival in honor of her self-sacrifice.
Akira: So it’s not just a beautiful, fancy festival.
Arthur: Yes. It’s a traditional festival that has been passed down through the ages. It has been celebrated every year up till now; it has never once been cancelled.
However, this year.....
Shino: They ran into an unprecedented problem, and the festival might fall through.
Arthur: Yes, that’s exactly right.
Shino: And that’s why we, the Sage’s wizards, were summoned.
The traditional flower festival has been celebrated for ages. But while preparing for this year’s festival, the organizers encountered problem after problem that they had never seen before.
Arthur asked for our help uncovering the cause of all these irregularities in order to make the festival a success.
Akira: All these problems they’d never seen before... Is it because of the < Great Catastrophe >?
Arthur: I think it definitely influenced what’s going on here. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t other hidden causes. We should be very careful with our investigation.
Girl: Um, hello.
