Prelude to the Festival and Justice | Chapter 3
Chapter 2 << | index | >> Chapter 4
Figaro: Whether you treasure your home base, or whether you value your destination.
The people of Central and South are both kind and like to help others, but Central wizards have a strong sense of duty, and will prioritise fulfilling their mission.
To that end, they are prepared to brave risks and make sacrifices as necessary. Just like Faust in the past, they make good leaders.
Mitile: When you say that, the Central wizards sound really cool....
Riquet: Heheh.
Rutile: But it worries me how the Central wizards rush into situations recklessly.... Please don’t do anything dangerous today.
Cain: What a cute thing to say. Don’t worry. I might look like this, but I’m a knight who’s seen my fair share of battles.
Come now, let’s head off on this adventure. Where could our ancient temple be in this desert wasteland?
Oz: Right in front of you.
Cain: Eh?
Oz: The ancient city of Mesa sleeps beneath the sand here.
Arthur: The legendary city of Mesa...... So it was real!
Rutile: But how did it come to be buried in sand...
Lennox: It might have been wiped out by a great natural disaster.
Mitile: So there’s a whole city sleeping underground. How are we going to reach the temple....
Akira: (There’s only desert wastelands as far as we can see..... I can’t believe that there’s a city lying right beneath our feet.....)
(Even a wizard would have a hard time digging up this much sand and soil....)
Just as I’m at a loss, Oz steps forward with his staff in hand.
Oz: Stand back.
Akira: Oz......?
Cain: Sir Sage, this way.
I step away from Oz, shielded by Cain. Oz slowly raises his staff over his head.
He chants his spell, his gaze as calm as if he were looking up at a bird.
Oz: << Vox Nox >>
His hair lifts and flutters against the backdrop of blue skies.
(Rustle of wind)
The next second, the wind changes into a blustering gale.
(Swirling sandstorm)
Akira: ............!
Cain holds my head down, keeping me tucked tightly within his arms. Even so, I can feel grains of sand pelting my arms and cheeks.
Mitile: Woah......!
Riquet: Ouuuuch......
Arthur: ......E-Everyone! It’s best if you keep your eyes and mouth closed......!
I couldn’t shut my eyes, even after being told to do so; Likewise, Arthur stares with eyes blown wide, even though he was the one who had given the warning.
The sight in front of us is so intense that we forget to blink.
(The sandstorm intensifies, skies growing darker)
Sand and soil from the endless stretch of desert collect into whirling eddies of air that soar high into the sky like cumulonimbus clouds.
Beneath the columns of sand clouds that diminish even the light of the bright blue skies.......
The buildings of the former city, reduced to ruins, start to emerge.
Akira: (......So this is the legendary city of Mesa......!)
(Whoosh)
Oz continues to churn up sand, as if he’s excavating a tremendous crater.
His momentum is terrifying to behold. In no time at all, it turns as dark as night around us, and the city is unearthed.
It feels as if the world is being remade.
Shaped by the hands of this solitary wizard.
Oz: .........
For the first time, I am scared of Oz.
No, that’s not it: I am struck with awe.
Akira: (......This is the strength equivalent to a god....)
Several minutes later...... Or it could have been mere seconds.
The sand clouds depart, forming large sand dunes in the far distance, and the blue skies return once again.
The ruins of the ancient city of Mesa lay spread out in front of our eyes.
Riquet: ......So this is the ancient city of Mesa....
Cain: The city is even bigger than I imagined.... The ruins look practically untouched.
Figaro: There has to be a way to revive the Ancient Temple within those ruins.
Let’s leave it to the Central wizards from here on. Once you revive the ancient temple, call for us.
Mitile: Eh!? We’re not going into the ruins?
Rutile: I kind of want to take a look!
Figaro: Nope. The Central wizards are taking the lead role this time. We’re only here as backup. Let’s leave the exploring to them, and we’ll cheer them on from here.
Figaro puts his arms around Rutile and Mitile to draw them closer, as if cajoling them.
At the same time, he levels an intimidating stare at Oz.
Figaro: Even if something dangerous happens, I’m sure Oz will take responsibility and handle the situation. I’m counting on you, Oz.
Oz: ............
It’s more of an intimidation than a request. Oz furrows his brows, and turns his back. Hurriedly, Arthur chases after his figure.
Arthur: Please wait, Sir Oz!
Cain: Arthur! Well, we’ll be going then. You guys just hang tight over here.
Lennox: Sorry. I can go along, you know? It might be dangerous......
Cain: It’ll be all right. What about you, Riquet? Are you staying here?
Riquet: No way.
Riquet raises his charming eyebrows, and glares at Figaro in reproach.
