Prelude to the Festival and Endearment | Chapter 2
Chapter 1 << | index | >> Chapter 3
Mitile: Camping.....
Mitile mumbles, as if savoring the thought. His eyes sparkle as he tugs at Rutile’s sleeve.
Mitile: We’ve gone camping before, right? With Mister Leno, by the big river. Do we get to do that again?
Rutile: I think it will require a bit more work than that. How many days do you think it will take, Dr. Figaro?
Figaro: It’s uncharted territory, so I think it should take at least a week. Should we ask Oz to teleport us there?
Shylock: I don’t want to cause Sir Oz any trouble, but we do have Sir Sage with us. That might be the safest way to do this.
Mitile: Ah..... You’re right......
I see how visibly disappointed Mitile looks and speak up.
Akira: Um... If possible, I’d like to go on a journey as well.
Figaro: Huh, really?
Akira: Yes. If it’s not too much trouble for you all.....
Murr: It’s Southern Country, so I think we’ll be fine? If we were headed to Northern Country, you really might die.
Rustica: Chloe and I have never been to the South either; I’d love to look around.
Mitile breaks out into a smile at Murr and Rustica’s words.
Mitile: I.... I want to go on a journey too! And I’m not a child anymore, so I can carry lots of luggage!
Shylock: My, how reliable. Then I suppose we should go on a leisurely journey for once.
Everyone cheers. This is the first time I’ve heard such a delighted response to our missions to revive the ancient temples.
It might be thanks to the cozy, peaceful personalities of the Southern wizards, and the carefree nature of the Western wizards.
Rutile: That means we need to pack! I’m looking forward to going on a trip with everyone!
Lennox: Yes. We should do as much research as possible beforehand so we know what to expect from the land.
Mitile and I look at each other and smile.
Akira: What should I pack? I’ve never gotten a chance to really tour this world like this, so I’m a little excited.
Mitile: Me too! Sir Sage, let’s pack our bags together.
Akira: Sounds good!
Figaro: All right, then. We should give ourselves some time and leave in about two days.
Shylock: If the weather’s poor, we can put it off another day. There’s no need to sweat it; let’s leave at the best time for everyone.
Shylock blows a puff of smoke from his pipe and smiles delightedly.
Shylock: Of course, the best thing to do is to get rid of problems as soon as possible. But if we rush and push ourselves too much, we’ll simply grow lifeless from the stress.
This world is already in shambles. We don’t want to be exhausted on top of that.
Let’s spend some time together that we can truly love.
Figaro: That’s right. Let’s take it slow and easy. You’ll notice all sorts of things when you go slowly.
It’s important to interact with the world with your heart and body — you don’t want to proceed simply because your destined role is pushing your back. It’ll be a good opportunity for the children to learn, too.
Figaro gently pats Mitile on the head.
Mitile is smiling more happily than a child who has just received a new toy.
His heart is thumping with excitement; he straightens his back with anticipation and pride. I feel the same way.
Akira: (Just as Mitile is protected by the grown-ups in his life, I’m also protected by these reliable wizards. It’s pleasant, and it puts me at ease, but....)
(I’ve always wanted to experience the winds and the scenery of this world with my own eyes and feet.)
Mitile: Sir Sage! Let’s get packing!
Akira: Yes!
✦✧☾✧✦
Akira: A change of clothes, a water bottle.... Oh, I should bring the sage’s manual too. Should I include a lantern as well?
Mitile: Um, you might need it if you get separated from us wizards at night.
Akira: Y-you’re right. Magic sure is useful.... Mitile, what are you bringing?
Mitile: I’m bringing a change of clothes, shoes, medicinal herbs, emergency food, some allowance, a knife, a lantern, a sleeping bag.....
Akira: Your bag is so full! Isn’t it heavy?
Mitile: It’s not that heavy! And even if it does get really heavy, Dr. Figaro will make it small for me.
Akira: That’s convenient..... Then I guess I’ll bring my pillow too. I don’t want to lose sleep......
Oh, that’s right. Does this world have something like a camera?
Mitile: A camera?
Akira: Um, it’s a device that preserves the view of a scene exactly as you see it. I wanted to take pictures during our journey.
Mitile: Is that like using magic to conjure a scene in an orb, a mirror, or some still water.....?
(Door opens)
Murr: You’ll find one if you look for it!
We turn around at Murr’s voice. He had opened the door without knocking. He floats into the air and sits on my desk.
Murr: The previous sage asked me to make one, so I did, using a magical science device. What was it called? A smartphone?
Akira: There’s a smartphone!?
Murr: It’s not finished, though. I ran into a problem during development.
Akira: A problem?
Murr smiles, and replies flatly.
Murr: I got bored!
Akira: (Ah.... That sounds just like Murr....)
