Prelude to the Festival and Endearment | Chapter 9

Chapter 8 << | index | >> Chapter 10

The creature releases a gentle cry and rubs its soft body against Mitile's legs. When Mitile reaches out to stroke it, his fingertips disappear into a sea of fur.
Mitile hugs the fluffy sea lion-cat hybrid creature, which is about the size of a grown-up’s pillow, close to him.

Mitile: Woah... it’s so fluffy and cute..... You're so warm.

Akira: (I was surprised, but upon closer look, it really is cute.... It’s like a big cat.....)

???: Mu....?

Mitile: It responded! ...Huh...? But it looks a little weak.

Lennox: It might be weak from being stuck in the bag for a long time. Try giving it some water and sugar.

Mitile nods solemnly. He holds the creature in one arm as he scoops water into his palm and offers it with the other.

Mitile: There, there, you can do it... Here's some water.

???: Mu.....

The fluffy creature brings its face close to Mitile’s hand and weakly licks at the water from his palm.

Mitile: Dr. Figaro.....

Figaro notices Mitile looking to him for advice and smiles.

Figaro: Try giving it your sugar, Mitile. If that doesn't work, Dr. Figaro will take care of it. I’m sure it'll be okay.

Mitile nods and grasps his magic jar, uttering his spell like a prayer.

Mitile: << Ortonik Sealsispilce >>

Mitile doesn’t trip up on his cumbersome spell; he says it carefully, with great clarity. Sugar appears in the glass jar.
Mitile opens the creature’s mouth and places a small, broken piece of sugar on its tongue.

???: Mu... muu muu.....

The fluffy creature begins to lick Mitile’s fingers. Then it gazes up at Mitile, as if asking for more.

Mitile: ....! Thank goodness. There there, just wait one moment.

By the time the creature finishes eating all the sugar in the jar, it looks completely healthy. It affectionately rubs its cheeks against Mitile’s face.

???: Muumuu!

Mitile: Ahaha! That tickles!

Rutile: I’m glad it’s all better! Well done, Mitile!

Figaro: You saved this creature with your own hands, Mitile. You're a wonderful wizard.

Mitile looks embarrassed but proud as Figaro pats his head and Rutile hugs him from behind.

Mitile: Yes! Nii-sama, Dr. Figaro... Can I take this creature with me?

Rutile: I would feel bad capturing it as a pet. But if the poachers found him by the Southernmost bay, maybe it originally lived near our destination.

Mitile: Where the ancient temple is? Then can we take it there, at least?

Figaro: Sure, but won't you get attached to it?

Mitile: It's okay! If we find its family, I'll return it to them!

Mitile hugs the fluffy creature and rubs his face against it.

Mitile: Your name is Muumuu. Let's get along!

Muumuu: Mu... muumuu!

Mitile and Muumuu sleep together that night. Mitile gazes at Muumuu the way Rutile looks at him — with the eyes of an older brother.

✦✧☾✧✦

Muumuu becomes our idol during the few days we spend traveling to our destination. Rutile and I absolutely adore him.

Muumuu: Muumuu.....

Mitile: You woke up from your nap? Good morning, Muumuu. You'll fall if you climb out of the bag.

Akira: Cute....

Rutile: Cute... He’s like a doll made of cotton....

Figaro: He's so popular. In my next life, I'm going to be reborn as that creature.

Lennox: He really is an unfamiliar creature. Maybe the species is native only to the far Southern regions, or maybe they were brought back from extinction by < The Great Catastrophe >....

Figaro: I don’t think he can do any magic or cause any harm, though. Ah... it looks like we're approaching our destination. The dormant ancient temple is nearby.

Figaro points to the highlands glittering with gentle pale greenery.

Rutile: Will the Western wizards be able to find us?

Figaro: I'll leave them a sign.
<< Possideo >>

As he casts his spell, a white cloud floating in the sky changes form, turning into a fluffy heart-and-pipe-shaped cloud.
The other clouds continue moving through the sky while changing shape, but this cloud stays in place.

Mitile: Why is it shaped like a heart and a pipe?

Figaro: I thought Shylock might blush and appreciate it.

Rutile: I think Mister Shylock is the kind of person who will laugh dryly instead.

Lennox: He is more of a city dweller, after all.....

We say goodbye to the floating sign and head down to the green highlands.
