Etude of the Frog Taking Shelter From the Rain | Chapter 8
Chapter 7 << | index | >> Chapter 9
Lennox: ...Thank you for the water. You really helped me out.
Colin: You’re welcome. I was lonely traveling on my own, too. Feel free to make yourself at home, Lennox.
I’m Colin, a Western wizard. This is a garden for my friend.
Lennox: Your friend....?
Colin: His name is Chloros. He’s a purple frog, and he’s the most beautiful frog in the world. I named him, too.
We met atop a puddle after the rain, with a rainbow cast across the sky.
Chloros was like a purple flower flying over the puddle — so clear that it looked like a mirror image of the sky. I instantly fell in love with his slender limbs and mystic skin.
When I gazed into his glistening eyes, I felt like I was struck by lightning. I wanted to be his friend no matter what.
He was refined and adorable and nimble on his feet. We couldn’t understand each others’ words, but we communicated through our hearts.
We would dance together under the moonlight, take walks together down by the seaside, and capture bugs together for fun. I was happy so long as he was by my side.
I was so proud to be his friend; I felt like we could accomplish anything so long as we were together.
I hope you understand the feelings I’m trying to convey. Do you have someone who is this precious to you?
Lennox: ........
Yes. We’re separated right now, but I do.
Colin: Then you should stay as close to them as possible. Before you end up like me and Chloros.
Lennox: ...What do you mean?
Colin: Chloros was whisked away by a bird of passage.
I’ve been searching for him ever since. That’s why I’ve been traveling with this garden. I created it using my magic tool; I think he’ll love it.
Lennox: ...... When you say ever since..... Ever since when?
Colin: Maybe about a hundred years ago.
Lennox: ...... Is Chloros a magical creature.... A magical frog?
Colin: He’s just a normal frog. Though to me, he’s the most precious frog in the world.
Lennox: .......
✦✧☾✧✦
Lennox: I couldn’t say anything to Colin, who was telling me all this with a smile on his face.
A frog that was whisked away by a bird over a hundred years ago.... I couldn’t tell him that he was probably already dead.
....Because I would never have wanted someone to say that to me.
That the person I had been tragically separated from... Was no longer alive.
Akira: ....Lennox......
Lennox: But.... My face must’ve given it away. Because Colin said this to me.
✦✧☾✧✦
Colin: Don’t look so sad, Lennox. Chloros is alive. I’m sure of it.
Lennox: ....Why....?
Colin: Because even though I was born a wizard, I’ve never once made a wish for myself.
And here I am, wishing from the bottom of my heart: "Please, be safe. Dear God, please let me meet him again."
It’s the one and only wish I’ve made in my entire lifetime! That’s why I think it’ll come true. ....Because if it doesn’t come true.....
If I can never meet Chloros again........
......Then.... Then what am I supposed to do?
Lennox: .........
Colin: How am I supposed to go on living....? Because.... I.....
I want to meet him, no matter what it takes...... I don’t want that to be our last farewell...... .....Chloros, I miss you........
.....I want to meet you again......
✦✧☾✧✦
Lennox: ....That was the only time I saw him cry. He bade me farewell with a smile the next morning.
"The next time we meet, I’ll introduce you to Chloros," he said.
Rutile: ....Mister Colin.....
Bradley: ...... .....I don’t sense the presence of any wizards besides us here.
Colin — that guy must’ve turned into stone.
The magic tool that created this garden must’ve been all that was left of him, and it was revived by the < Great Catastrophe >.....
Lennox: .........
Mithra: Then let’s collect the magic tool, destroy this place, and be done. That’ll settle this case.
Lennox: .....Yes.
Sadness drifts through our bitter silence. The Southern brothers, the twins, Figaro — everyone is quiet.
The raindrops echoing through the garden sound like endless tears falling.
Neither the purple frog nor his wizard friend exist in this world.
That’s when Bradley makes his rifle disappear into thin air and looks up at the sky.

Bradley: We’re not in any rush to go home, right? You said they danced under the moonlight.
Why don’t we wait for night to fall and celebrate majestically; that’ll be our way of saying goodbye to him.
