Rheita Mountains | Main Episode
MahoYaku Masterpost & Translator's Notes
CHAPTER 1
Akira: We’ve arrived at the Southern tower. Today I’d like the Southern wizards to head to the Rheita Mountains.
Mitile: The Rheita Mountains? The Rheita Mountains are where Mister Leno went during the summertime, right?
Lennox: Yes, to let my sheep graze. Sir Sage, what happened in the Rheita Mountains?
Akira: We received a report from the residents in the Rheita foothills.... A bizarre magic beast seems to be appearing at the mountain summits....
Rutile: A magic beast? That must be scary.... We need to solve the problem right away.
Figaro: The Rheita Mountains are the main source of life for the local population. Let’s make sure they can feel at ease hiking up the hills.
Akira: I agree. Let’s head off right away.
Lennox: Oh, that’s right, Sir Sage. If you let your cows or sheep graze in the Rheita Mountains, sometimes they’ll multiply.
Akira: Multiply? Do you mean they have children or bring their comrades along?
Lennox: They’re said to be gifts from the mountain spirits. The extra sheep all disappear like an illusion by the time you go home, but.....
It’s said that they grant mysterious protective powers to the shepherds when they disappear. If you’d like, please try it out.
Akira: Grazing, huh. I see. I’ll try it out.
Lennox: Well then, let’s go.
✦✧☾✧✦
(Woosh)
Akira: So those are the Rheita Mountains.... What a magnificent sight..... The peaks are higher than the clouds......
Mitile: The rows and rows of mountains look like many big waves crashing in towards us!
Rutile: Ah! Look at that! There’s a mountain goat running down a steep cliff!
Akira: Amazing...! I didn’t know goats could walk on such steep slopes!
Figaro: Oh. There’s a herd of sheep near the peak of the mountains. Looks like a shepherd is guiding them.
Lennox: That’s Peter..... I know him. I’ll go talk to him.
CHAPTER 2
Peter: Mister Lennox? Mister Lennox....! Wow, you haven’t changed at all....!
Lennox: I haven’t seen you in a while, Peter. You used to be smaller than Mitile. How old are you now?
Peter: I’m 30 now. I have two children, too. Are these boys yours, Mister Lennox?
Rutile: Our names are Rutile and Mitile. We’re wizards from the Town of Clouds. Mister Lennox was our mother’s friend.
Peter: Wizards from the Town of Clouds! Amazing. So you guys are wizards from the city. You’re all so fashionable!
Mitile: Ehehe. We’re city wizards? I feel like I’ve become a Western wizard!
Figaro: Well, the Town of Clouds has stagecoaches — to the people in this region, that’s probably plenty metropolitan.
Lennox: Peter. Where does the magic beast appear?
Peter: Magic beast? It’s no beast! It’s a chance to get rich quick!
The young man named Peter laughs gaily with sparkling eyes.
Peter: A golden ram has appeared in the Rheita Mountains! If we catch him and sell him off to a merchant, I’m sure we’ll make a fortune!
Lennox: A golden ram....?
Then, an old man with white hair appears from behind the herd of sheep.
???: You fool! The golden ram must be a magic beast in disguise!
Lennox: John..... Peter’s father, John. Ah, this brings back memories.
John: Lennox! It’s been a while! You never change. Just seeing you makes me feel like I’ve grown young again.
Peter: Grown young again? Hmph. You’re just a superstitious old fart. The golden ram is a gift from the mountain spirits.
John: No, it’s a manifestation of the mountain demons who lead people astray. Listen to your elders!
Peter: I’m the head of the household now! Why won’t you ever listen to me! You think you know it all!
John: You’re just a brat in a man’s body! You’re rash and you overstep boundaries because you never take caution!
We’re all surprised by the sudden argument between father and son.
CHAPTER 3
Peter: Anyway, you have no say in this matter, Father! Mister Lennox, if you find the golden ram, please let me know!
Peter says, and nimbly makes his way up the mountains with his sheep.
Lennox watches him go, and then laughs and spins around to look at John.
Lennox: He’s just like you when you were young.
John: Don’t say it, Lennox. Now I know what a complete and utter fool I was.
John toys with his hat in embarrassment and sighs heavily.
As if tending to a young boy, Lennox pats John on the back and puts John’s hat on his head.
Lennox: I don’t think you’re a fool. You weren’t a fool in your youth. And you’re not a fool now. Neither is Peter.
Figaro: For now, let’s all search for the golden ram. The Rheita Mountains are vast, so we should split up and look for it.
Lennox: Got it. Dr. Figaro, please take care of Rutile and Mitile. Sir Sage, please come with me.
Akira: Yes! Let’s do our best.
✦✧☾✧✦
The summits of the Rheita Mountains are flourishing in green. Endless highlands spread far and wide like the ocean.
Beyond the vastly flowing hills lie even more hills covered in green. Sheep and cows graze away in the lower pastures.
I squint from the brightness of the sparkling grass reflecting the sunlight, and say to Lennox:
Akira: The golden ram.... Do you think it’s a magic beast, as Mister John says? Or do you think it’s a chance to get rich quick, as Mister Peter says?
Lennox: I wonder. But in any case, it’s something that’s disturbing everyone’s peaceful lives.
I was once that disturbance. Before Peter was born.... Back when John was a homely child.
CHAPTER 4
Akira: Lennox? You disturbed everyone’s peaceful lives?
Lennox: Yes. When John found out that I was a wizard who had traveled around the world, he said this:
Take me with you. I’m going to make a fortune in the West, become successful in Central, and establish a large farm in the East.
Akira: He sounds exactly like his son Peter chasing after the golden ram.... And what did you say to him, Lennox?
Lennox: I didn’t take him with me. But John refused to give up. He stole sheep from his parents and headed down the mountains with them.....
Sold them for money, and headed out on a journey. But he got caught up in a marriage scam; a lady took all his money, and he didn’t even make it to the Town of Clouds.
Akira: I see.....
Lennox: When people venture out into an unknown world with their heart full of dreams, but are ultimately betrayed — they lose hope, and become cautious of anything that disturbs their inner peace.
Perhaps that’s what it means to grow old. But the children and the youth will always get excited when they see something new.
I don’t know if it’s better to be excited about the golden ram, or to be cautious of it.
But I like both types of people. Because I too had a dream. And my dream was broken. And my heart was healed by living a peaceful life.
How about you, Sir Sage?
Akira: I.....
Option: Want to reach for the stars.
Akira: I want to reach for the stars. Adventures do seem scary, but I still admire them.
Lennox: Then when you decide to go out on a journey, I will protect the place that you call home, Sir Sage.
Because having a place to return home will make you stronger. So I’m sure you’ll be able to venture out far and wide.
Option: Want to live a steady life.
Akira: I want to live a steady life. When it comes to thrills, I think I’m fully satisfied with listening to other people’s stories......
Lennox: Then I will go out on a journey — one that’s long enough to at least bring back stories of my adventures, Sir Sage.
Because hearing stories of adventure will make the peaceful life that you are protecting seem all the more precious.
Lennox says, and looks up.
A shining gold presence — as brilliant as the morning sun — moves in the shadow of a large boulder at the top of the gently sloped green hill.
CHAPTER 5
It’s a magnificent ram. He stands at the peak of the mountain with sturdy legs and giant horns that reach all the way down to his shoulders.
He looks nothing like Lennox’s adorable sheep: there’s a certain dignity in his quiet gaze.
I realize that I knew nothing about these creatures at all. They’re not just gentle, peaceful, and obedient.
Akira: The golden ram.....
Lennox: It doesn’t look like a magic beast. Maybe it’s under a bizarre spell..... I’ll go capture it.
Akira: Huh!?
Lennox steps forward and walks up the slope with ease.
The golden ram notices the challenger approaching from below, and kicks the dirt with his forelegs with the dignity of a champion.
Thud, thud, thud. The golden ram rushes down the slope, scattering grass through the air, his head down to intimidate his opponent with his horns.
Akira: Watch out, Lennox....!
Lennox: .........
(Rustle)
Lennox digs his heels into the ground and crouches. He opens his arms wide and grabs the ram by his horns.
The wizard and the golden ram are locked in a battle of strength. They kick up a cloud of dust and sweat as they push and pull and spin round and round, each trying to catch the other’s back.
I’m nervous, but I’m also mesmerized. Because it almost looks like a dance.
A human and a ram, clashing with each other in the golden light — it’s a beautiful sight.
But I return to my senses, and shout:
Akira: Lennox, please use magic!
Lennox: ......! << Forsettao Meiuvat >>
Lennox utters his spell, as if he’s just remembered that he can use magic.
Enveloped by the light emitted by the silver key in Lennox’s hand, the golden ram falls asleep.
Lennox brushes the sweat off his forehead and shrugs his shoulders.
Lennox: Not again. I always forget to use magic.
I laugh at his usual forgetfulness, and run to his side.
CHAPTER 6
It turns out the secret to the golden ram was a moonlight fruit that had been affected by the < Great Catastrophe >.
When you eat moonlight fruit, your body usually shines for a short period of time before going back to normal. But this ram was affected for an extended period of time.
When Lennox casts his spell, the golden ram turns back into a normal ram.
Peter: Aw, man.... So my dreams of getting rich were all an illusion.
John: That’s just how it is. The best way to live is to work hard, day after day.
Mister John laughs and consoles the disappointed Mister Peter.
Lennox strokes the sleeping ram and speaks up.
Lennox: It’s not all bad. The wolves and foxes won’t approach these mountains with such a powerful ram around.
He’ll protect your livestock.
Mister Peter and Mister John look each other in the eye and grin.
Peter: That’s good to hear! I’ve never seen such a mighty ram. He’ll put my sheep at ease.
John: Yes. Let’s treasure him as a guardian deity of the mountains. By the way, are you folks hungry?
Rutile: I’m starving!
Peter: Then you should eat at our place! Can you tell me about the Town of Clouds? I want to hear about the adventures of the Sage’s wizards too!
Mitile: Yay, thank you! What should we talk about? We have so many stories to tell!
Peter: Thanks! My children will be delighted. They love stories of adventure.
Figaro: All children do.
We exchange smiles as we head down from the summit of the mountains alongside the sheep.
A tiny sheep sticks his head out of Lennox’s bag.
Lennox: You want to eat the soft highlands grass too?
Lennox utters his spell, and the sheep returns to its normal size. It runs through the fields, full of energy.
Lennox watches over it with a gentle, serene, reliable gaze that reminds me of these mountains.
I remember the image of Lennox in direct combat with the golden ram, and say to him, from behind his back:
Akira: Lennox, you were so cool back there. You’re a gentle but powerful man — that’s so lovely.
I thought he might blush and draw back from the praise.
But as he turns around, Lennox closes one eye and looks at me.
Lennox: It’s an honor, Sir Sage.

I’m the one who is taken aback, turning red. I feel the same way I felt when I first saw the golden ram.
I realize that I knew nothing about this being at all. He’s not just gentle, peaceful, and obedient.....
