Daikagura! Celebratory New Year’s Live | First Sunrise - 1
These chapter titles refer to hatsuhi no de, the "first sunrise of the new year"--the same phrase Subaru uses in the first chapter.
Prologue << | index | >> First Sunrise - 2
Location: Gymnasium
Subaru: Ooh… ☆
It’s a pretty huge crowd! Like a live performance! This is exciting~ ☆
Hokuto: Behave yourself, Akehoshi, you’re embarrassing… The idol department alone has quite a few people, so this is to be expected
The gymnasium is a rather fine building, but there is a limit to the number of people that it can fit
After a long break, there are usually several people who give up on their dreams and drop out…
So the population should increasingly dwindle, but it seems that this year, there are fewer mid-year dropouts than usual
Subaru: Ah~..... People quit all the time, yeah…
Well, if they have no intention of giving it their all, it’s probably better for them to give up early and look for a different path
Hokuto: Yes. That is true, though it was a little sad to watch our classmates disappear like teeth being lost
The entertainment world is a battlefield; those who are not committed cannot be forcibly mobilized
The survival rate was high this year. We, “Trickstar,” produced good results at “SS” and the like, and everyone wants to be like us
They might be able to~... perhaps it’s a result of them thinking such things
If that’s the case, then I feel full of pride. We accomplished something worthwhile, something significant
It should be fine to be at least that self-confident; let us hold our heads high
Makoto: Ahaha. Until last year, we were mere “nobodies,” but in no time, we made our way to the “SS,” the top of the entertainment world
I wonder if everyone else thought, “me too, me too”
If that’s the case, then, it really is something to be proud of
Hokuto: Hmph… that means that if we let our guard down, we’ll quickly be knocked down and replaced. Every person around us is a rival, so let us focus ourselves
My grandmother also said “after a victory, tie the strings of your head guard tight”1
Subaru: Ahaha. Because Hokke~ says that every single time, we’ve tightened our strings so much that our head guards are stuck tight!
At this rate, we won’t be able to see where we’re headed~, relax, relax ♪
Hokuto: Hmph… We relaxed plenty during New Year’s break; from here on out, we have to pull ourselves together
Yuuki, you should also straighten yourself up, you’ve been yawning over and over again
Makoto: Fuaafu…. Before we entered the “SS,” I was playing all sorts of games at home to relieve my stress
Winter is the season when lots of new titles come out, so I was checking in, too
I pulled all nighters trying to clear them all during winter break, and it seems like that threw off my biological clock. Auafu, I’m so sleepy…. ♪
Subaru: Ahahaha, Ukki~, you’re making such a lame expression! Snap snap ☆
Makoto: Don’t take pictures…. It’s not as bad as before, but I’m still pretty embarrassed~. I want to be the most beautiful me when being photographed
Hokuto: You’re going to ruin your eyesight even more if you play games all the time, Yuuki
I recall I handed you a workout for personal training; have you been doing that every day? Aren’t you slacking off?
We have the “Daikagura” performance this weekend; at the very least, make sure to adjust yourself before then
Just because we’re done with the “SS,” it doesn’t mean you should be all burnt out
Subaru: Nn? What’s the “Daikagura,” again? Wasn’t the first DreamFes of the new year we were entered in called, “Geishun! A Festival of Party Tricks ☆”2?
Hokuto: Ah, the DreamFes title was changed
It’s a joint festival with “Akatsuki,” after all. They have a prestigious style, so… there was a complaint that having such a silly DreamFes name would be a problem
Makoto: Ah, that sounds like something Hasumi-senpai would say…
We, too, became famous after coming home from the “SS”; it’s kinda like we’ve joined the ranks of the powerful “units.” So we can’t really do something too foolish
Subaru: Eh~, that’s so boring, though? I love doing foolish things~ ☆
Hokuto: We have a reputation now, it can’t be helped. We’ve become people to be admired, recognized, observed
We’ve become a leading “unit” representing Yumenosaki Academy
We ought to be conscious of our status as those standing above others, such as “fine” and “Akatsuki” are
We need to put an end to our childhood days, where we innocently and carelessly frolicked around
Subaru: Is that so~..... Well, I guess this is the end of the idiot duo, as well. You’ve taken good care of me, Ukki~?
Makoto: Eh, why are you saying such things, Akehoshi-kun! We’re forever the idiot duo!
There’s still a mountain-load of things I want you to teach me, I definitely don’t want to disband!
Subaru: Ukki~! I’m happy, let’s always get along as the idiot duo ☆
Hokuto: No, disband immediately. Please grow up, I beg of you
Mao: O~i! Do you guys have a second?
Subaru: Ah, Sari~! Sari~ seems like Sari~ this year too! Akeome~3 ☆
Mao: Akeome~ ♪ Don’t start off the new year by jumping on me like that, Subaru… You’re really full of energy, huh?
Makoto: Isara-kun, you on the other hand seem like you’re pretty tired? What happened~, are you sleep-deprived like me, or are you still out of it because of New Year’s vacation?
Mao: No, I’ve been assigned a bit of a troublesome task…. Guess I might be nervous
Hokuto: Are you being overworked at the start of the new year? I hope you rested properly on New Year’s
Mao: I’m fine, I’m fine. I properly spent some time with my family for the first time in a while~. My younger sister is usually so cold, but this time, she stuck all close to me…
We went shopping together, and she made me buy an excessive amount of clothes
Hokuto: You sound like you get along well. For once, my parents were both off during the New Year’s holidays, so the whole family relaxed together
Mao: Is that so. It’s good that everyone was able to properly enjoy their New Year’s break ♪

1. The idiom here (勝って兜の緒を締めよ) essentially means, "don't let your guard down after a victory." It's a warning to avoid taking off your protective headgear (the word used is “kabuto”) after a victory, because you never know when someone's going to come after you.
2. Geishun = 迎春, "Welcoming Spring," yet another variation of "Happy new year!" (This also happens to be the kanji in the event BG.) Party tricks = 隠し芸, literally "hidden tricks" to show off to others at a party.
3. “Akeome,” short for “Akemashite omedetou,” is the most casual new year's greeting, often exchanged between (young) friends. I'm keeping it as "akeome" to convey the lack of formality.
